Great company, completely mismanaged
Staff Accountant (Former Employee) –  Dallas-Fort Worth, TXDecember 4, 2018
I had travelled across the country to begin a new life with Smurfit Kappa and was promised that advancement opportunities were available as well as work life balance would improve; since I started in 2015, I was told that my division didn't "warrant" advancement, and close has only gotten worse. The people are great, but is completely mismanaged and places its employees too far down as a priority; safety is the companies #1 priority which is great, but this seems to only apply to the employees in the plants, not anyone on the administrative side.
Pros
Decent pay
Cons
Work life balance, care for employees

Great place to work, except for the new management
Local Truck Driver and Backup Dispatcher (Former Employee) –  Forney, TXSeptember 27, 2018
Smurfit use to be a great place to work. It was laid back, busy as can be, great co-workers, & great former management. Then the new managers started coming in & thought they could teach people who had been doing their jobs safely for 10 years or more, how to do their job better by creating books with illustrations to follow. With old managers you got written up if you really deserved it. With the new managers, they're write up happy for every little thing, up to & including not following their diagram book that caused you to do your job less safely than before.

The benefits are amazing though & the staff, even HR & co-workers are very helpful.
Pros
Co-workers, Hr, Benefits
Cons

Growing pains
Sales Professional (Former Employee) –  Industry, CASeptember 4, 2018
Smurfit Kappa has and continues to have serious growing pains as they make their mark in the US marketplace. There is opportunity but management direction and overall satisfaction is like a roller coaster from one month to the next.

Was able to grow well within the company and was provided training when asked for it.
Pros
Lots of opportunity with a big company
Cons
big company growing pains, try to make US market like EU market

Regret working here
Manager (Former Employee) –  Von Ormy, TXMay 5, 2018
Work life balance non-existent. As salary you’re stuck with working for free when you have to work Saturday & Sunday’s...happens too often. No raises, no bonuses. Horrible planning & scheduling. Reactive instead proactive. Departments do not work together. No training. No success plan for advancement.
Pros
PTO... look forward to time taken off!
Cons
Everything else

Poor management and disconnected from customer needs
Packaging designer (Former Employee) –  Carson, CASeptember 18, 2018
Many promises made but few followed upon. Didn’t understand the region and the needs of the customers in that region. Very poor upper management that lacked direction. Work environment became very uneasy as layoffs occurred regularly.

Productive workplace
Currently a Machine OPerator (Current Employee) –  260 N Roosevelt Ave, Chandler, AZ 85226February 13, 2017
The work isn't bad but management could drive the most loyal of employees to walk off and never return mid shift. Constantly changing the time at which you start work, gets too confusing, as well as constantly asking you to take a much much later lunch so you can finish an order. pointless meeting about problems the plant is having and how things will be done to fix them and nothing gets done quickly if ever. Sometimes its demanded of you to work extra hours even on weekends as they see fit not caring if you have a family or not, if there is no work to be done you will be ordered to sweep all day as opposed to dismissing you with a paid 4 hours as stated in company policy. Blatant disrespect from supervising staff, As well as blatant favoritism. No loyalty.
Pros
1 paid 15 minute break
Cons
Harrassment from supervising staff as well as abhorrent favoritism.

Complacent
Designer (Former Employee) –  Orange County, CAMay 11, 2017
I felt there was no room for me to grow or advance as a designer. For the amount of work performed daily, there was hardly any compensation. After a year there, my drive was stale.
