I was hired as an animal caretaker in Bethesda. I applied in early September, was called the next day for a phone interview, then the day after that got a call to schedule an in person interview. My interview took place about a week after I applied, on the NIH campus. I received detailed directions about where to report and who to contact. HR escorted me to another building where my interview took place. The interview itself and a short quiz took about an hour.
The following week HR let me know the position was filled, but wanted to forward my resume for a caretaker position at a smaller NIH location in Rockville. I interviewed there too, but a couple weeks after that I was offered the job I originally interviewed for on NIH main campus. I started working in early November, so the entire process took 2 months. Once I was offered the job it was contingent on a drug screen, an extensive background check, and an occupational health physical.
Then when you start working there is yet another, more extensive background check for government contractors that you need to complete, get a NIH parking permit, and a Sobran/nih badge. It can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months to get your badge, and even then it doesn't work right away. It will allow you to get on campus though without going the visitor entrance or car inspection. But if you work in a secure building, your badge won't scan right away to allow access.

The scheduled hours are nice but not the actual hours you end up working with no appreciation involved from management

If you work there no. Many people advance to higher positions without it. From outside it is to your advantage if you do. Most of the staff do not have it and the company struggles to make it a priority.
