Event Coordinator (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXDecember 28, 2017
Wasn't a paid job but more for a leadership experience, but did gain experience working with many different people from different backgrounds, learned how to collaborate and take different ideas and applying them, and how to organize events for more than 100 people

Cash Applications Coordinator (Former Employee) –  Richardson, TXJuly 6, 2017
Company is easy going. Attempts to keep their employees happy. They have summer parties for all employees to recognize them. The building is newly remodeled with a lot of lighting. The team is small & each have their own responsibilities.

I thought Society of Petroleum Engineers was going to be my forever home, but the downturn of petroleum had other plans for my career. If they were to ask me back I would go.

Workshops Administrator (Former Employee) –  Richardson, TXMarch 13, 2017
I found there was not much room for moving up the ladder -- even if you had the skill set. Many positions have persons who have been in them for years.
Pros
Flexibility of schedule; 9/10/80 work schedule
Cons
Promotions were slow coming...

Managing intellectual property in petroleum research
Member retention specialist (Current Employee) –  Dallas, TXFebruary 16, 2017
I was able to communicate with scientists from every corner of Earth. The job allowed me to learn something new every day from the world of petroleum research. It was intellectually stimulating but because I could not always relate to the research or science the learning curve was very challenging. The management of the company, unfortunately, remained stressed since I started because of lay off that had just passed and new ones that were coming and the company's financial troubles. The environment was extremely friendly and positive encouraging self-starter independence.
Pros
Work from home 2 days a week.
Cons
Looming Lay offs and stressed management.

Don't work in Houston Office, aka stepchild office
Operations (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXAugust 4, 2016
Senior management is a joke. There is literally no human resources. If you file a complaint, you are likely to receive a pink slip within weeks. One manager with a department of four fired SIX people in two years without any reprimand and they were all decent employees. Zero communication within the company.

Of the 30 people hired when I arrived three years ago, only four people remain. Most were fired for little to no reason which is a direct reflection of poor senior management. Four were laid off and maybe five left on their own accord.

I highly suggest not working for this company. If you do, always have a back up plan.
Pros
9/80 schedule
Cons
Poor senior management, lack of job security, lay-offs, low morale, no communication

Always busy, a company that sets the bar high. Very enjoyable.
Contract Worker- Assistant (Former Employee) –  Richardson, TXJuly 4, 2016
SPE was one of the most exciting jobs and companies I have come to encounter. I was contract, which you may think you'd run out of things to do. Not at all. There was always a department needing help catching up or to take someone's spot while they were away. Clean, open floor concept which made the environment breathable and relaxed. Some of the friendliest professionals I have worked with, I would recommend anyone to work for this company or use this company for their services. The hardest part of the job would have to be managing your time well, depending on your work ethic. Like I mentioned there is always something to do just manage your time well. The most enjoyable was finishing a task and providing customers with the results of their ads. Very satisfying when they were blown away by the quality and professionalism of the company.
Pros
Flexible Schedule, Clean and Friendly atmosphere, Insurance
Cons
Not for the light hearted, the customers can be very hard headed

Co-workers are great upper management is not.
marketing (Former Employee) –  Richardson, TXJanuary 6, 2016
Upper management is very old school and have political strife's. Can;t see outside the box. Lack of communication. Great worker bee. Lots of talented good people. Diverse culture. Behind the times. Takes years before any changes happen. Slow technology movement. Too many chiefs not enough workers to complete what upper management wants. Very little room for advancement. Coworkers are amazing, told one thing but when they try to accomplish the goal are beaten down by old upper management.

A bit of a mess
IT (Current Employee) –  Richardson, TXDecember 14, 2015
If you're used to doing things the right way, look elsewhere. Once you get a job in IT it's impossible to lose it. As a result, there are a lot of outdated and unchallenged processes that exist simply because that's how they've always done it. The lifers here dictate the culture and that culture is that change is bad. Management is not very self aware and a little spineless when it comes to doing what needs to be done and not just maintaining the status quo. A recent re-org and round of layoffs (very rare for SPE) ignored the main problems facing the company (namely overpaid and under-qualified people who simply don't know what they're doing at every level) in favor of short sighted cost cutting. If you don't mind never accomplishing anything, having to deal with backwards processes, and only having an opportunity for advancement when someone dies or retires, you've come to the right place.
Pros
Every other Friday off. Staff is very friendly for the most part.
Cons
Management.

Marketing Writer - Researcher (Current Employee) –  Houston, TXNovember 21, 2015
The company used to be great organisation, but now with low oil prices, the executive team has shot themselves to the feet as they started laying off people, though the confirmed staff earlier that they won't let people go whatever the reason.
Pros
Less stress
Cons

Staff editor (Former Employee) –  Richardson, TXNovember 17, 2015
Talented and hard-working staff made it a nice place to work; however, there is not much opportunity for growth. Senior management is not supportive and they are out of touch with employees. Lacks strong leadership.
Pros
Benefits and staff
Cons
Limited opportunity for upward mobility

Good benefits, time off, good work/life balance
Anonymous (Former Employee) –  Richardson, TXOctober 26, 2015
The company culture seems a bit behind the times. It is a good place to get experience but they try to do too many things without available staff resources. Staff spend a lot of time working on special requests from committee members because they are unable to say no.

There are some really good people there and most work hard to do the right thing but there are some who seem to spend more time gossiping and less time being productive.

There are also a lot of people who have been there 15, 20, 30+ years and been promoted due to seniority rather than ability. It's easy to get comfortable and before you know it you have stayed too long. It just means people tend to get set in their ways and it's hard to make positive changes. It doesn't mean they are not good people.

Work/life balance is one of the good things there. They have fairly flexible work schedule and some are able to work from home a couple of days a week.

A major plus is the 9/80 work week where you have every other friday off. A con is the EZ Labor system where every staff member, regardless of salary or hourly has to account for every minute of time on an ADP system. It's like filling out a time card.
Pros
Good people, benefits, location, 9/80 work week
Cons
'Old' culture, siloed leadership, time cards
