Rewarding Job Ruined by Management

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
When starting this job, it was honestly pretty enjoyable. Despite being paid minimum wage, the work was rewarding and benefits even for part timers was nice. However this year, new management in the department was put in place, and it turned toxic quickly. Help was not offered when desperately needed, supervisors were often disrespectful, good co-workers were fired for seemingly no reason, and larger concerns or issues were ignored, while the smallest problems became the focus. Poor management in the department very quickly led to a overworked and stressed out department. Combine this with the minimum wage pay, and it became a very easy decision to leave.

Pros

Benefits for Full and Part-Time

Cons

Minimum Wage for Maximum Work, Toxic Management

Do not work here, it will ruin your dreams of working with animals.

This is the worst animal shelter job I have ever had. Management is terrible, the entire work environment is toxic and cruel. Honestly felt like i had PTSD upon leaving. Do not recommend at all. Way too much euthanasia, too much drama and people are treated horribly.

Pros

Nothing is good about this place.

Cons

Poor pay, you make more at Mighty Taco.

Great mission, poor management

On the surface this is an amazing place to work, especially if you are interested in shelter (veterinary) medicine. There is a severe disconnect between management and the “Frontline” workers (veterinary staff, animal care, foster care, drivers/peace officers ect.).

Pros

Shelter medicine is very interesting, great facility

Cons

No work/ life balance, high turnover, poor management

Broken Hearted

I have wanted to work with animals all my life, I thought the SPCA would be the perfect job but don't be fooled. Management is terrible at the SPCA, there is always a sense of confusion. You are disrespected constantly, they find reasons to write you up if they see you as an obstacle when you point out how to make improvements that could make management look bad. I left a broken hearted person after many years of hard and long dedication. I don't recommend this job to anyone, it will only disappoint you the way a bad relationship keeps people trap.

Pros

Animals, paid time off, health insurance

Cons

Poor management, low compensation

Toxic management

Management sells you on things they never deliver on, they lie frequently, and play favorites/politics all the time. Compensation is a joke, employees leave frequently crying because of the stress and aggravation. HR exists to reprimand employees and cover management from questions of the board of directors.

Pros

Working with animals, wonderful volunteers

Cons

Compensation, stress, stagnation, lack of support, hostile work environment

Great job, Terrible management

The job itself is satisfying. The whole point of being in this field is to take care of animals and you really can do that here. The management however is a nightmare. No communication within the department or with other departments. When you ask questions you get into trouble or get conflicting answers. Benefits are ok but pay is insulting. This is a high stress job and to the management you are replaceable and faceless. If you take a job here you will be running for your entire day with little to no support. May the the odds ever be in your favor.

Pros

health coverage, 401k, get to take care of animals

Cons

management, low pay, high stress

Terrible

Do not work here literally everything is a mess! No one working there has any idea what’s going on. Everyday animals are put to sleep for no reason. The vets and the techs are clueless half the time and ignore the sick animals that actually need attention. Animal care is a joke and everything is based on favoritism. Teens and washed up adults who couldn’t get anywhere in life make up the animal care team. You are overworked and underpaid.

Pros

Animals

Cons

Everything
