A job of two halves
Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Birmingham, UK - February 27, 2023
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedWorking for the Frasers Group has been interesting. The good thing about the job is that you and your colleagues become extremely close and they are often the only reason you want to show up to work. You form a tight bond, usually supporting each other with the high demands of the job and the questionable senior management. The job also offers a lot of flexibility in terms of working hours. As a uni student, I can give in my availability at the beginning of a term and I’m pretty much never asked to work outside of that unless someone is ill. The 20% discount company wide is also nice. Onto the cons. The pay is outrageous for what you are expected to do!!! I earn around £7/hr as a 20 year old and am expected to work 9-8, 5 days a week. This wouldn’t be a huge issue if we weren’t doing the jobs of around 6 members of staff. Staff are usually overworked due to poor management and high rates of labour turnover, leading to more stress and the cycle continues. To worsen this, we get paid according to cut-off dates; roughly, your December pay would be the last 2/3 weeks of November’s hours and 1/2 weeks of December’s hours. It just means you could have worked tirelessly one month and still see very little of that money. Very inconvenient and they weren’t open about this in the hiring process. As well as this, management is questionable, at best. I get on with my floor manager and supervisors but they demonstrate clear favouritism, can be rude and patronising and often punish employees they don’t like with poor hours. You are just expected to deal with it. The hours are also random. -
Pros
20% discount, great colleagues!
Cons
Short breaks, poor management, poor pay, high stress

Enjoyable job but bad pay
Part-time Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Belfast - January 27, 2023
I love my job and have made amazing friends there. I work on footwear which entails serving shoes, performing valuations and organising the stockrooms after deliveries. In terms of pay, I would say that tills staff earn an appropriate amount, however, working on footwear is a more demanding job and should be paid more.
Pros
Friendly collegues
Cons
Bad pay

Employment Shop Assistant (Former Employee) - Skipton - December 6, 2022
i really enjoyed the job role in hand always something to do, busy work front of house environment and always friendly front of-house staff making it easier and effective to work inside the workplace. In general, i always enjoyed working at sports direct i found it rewarding helping customers find what they want and need and enjoyed making new friends within the staff workplace. One of the things i learnt was to up-sell the company by offering sales and promoting sales for me this was one of the best skills I have learnt as a result of working here was that it gave me an opportunity to grow my sales skills.
Pros
flexible shifts
Cons
short breaks

management
Sports Direct Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Unit Msu 5 - Levels 02/03 The New, Birmingham B5 4BA - October 9, 2022
The management was terrible. Co-workers I spoke to during my time agreed and said they were unhappy because the managers were not very positive and showed clear favourites within the team. there was also issues with timetables not being updated on time or shifts being unfairly distributed between team members.

Long, stressful hours but the team was nice
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Reading - September 25, 2022
Worked here over the summer. Overall it was okay, but the main problem I had was the hours -- it was a zero hour contract so often I was given no work and sometimes I was scheduled in for 12 hour shifts, this made making plans really difficult. All my colleagues were nice though, although there was quite a high turnover.

Awful. Avoid
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - England - February 19, 2021
Management are awful and unprofessional. Expect you to work when they want you to and at short notice, pay no attention to your availability at all. Expect you to stay way past your shift finishes.
Pros
Commission, discount at other stores
Cons
Short breaks, bad management, poor pay, overworked, under appreciated, expect you to work when you’re unavailable

Very poor
Casual Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - London - July 12, 2019
Underpaid and mistreated by Managers who are overpaid and not worthy of their position due to their unprofessional attitude. Forced to sell £1 bags and star products if we wanted better pay, no guaranteed hours

Not the Best
Retail Assistant (Former Employee) - Weymouth, Dorset - October 14, 2018
As a student, I worked 4-hour shifts on both days of the weekend for Sports Direct, on a minimum wage 0-hours contract, which is both confusing and unideal as you have no idea when your horus will be. Typically, I would get to work, put all my stuff away in the back, then immediately sign in on the payroll app at the till. Following that I had to ask my managers what I will be doing for the day, and do what they say for the following 4 hours. In this job, I learned how to cope with stress, how to communicate effectively with customers, and the punctuality required for the standard working retail life. However, I also learned that this was not the job for me. Sometimes I lacked the skills of retaining stress with myself whilst dealing with customers and found myself in situations with the managers that I could not do anything about. In Weymouth Sports Direct, the management there are very friendly, although they would like you to cut straight to the job with no messing around, which was difficult for me because I would want to joke sometimes, and sometimes it would not be the most appropiate time to do so. In the shop, the other Casual Retail Assistants who work there are extremely friendly and useful to have by your side, making working life a lot easier. however when the shop gets busier, typically everyone's moods become stricter because they're all having to deal with about 6 customers at one time, which in some cases could be a horror show. that is the most hardest part of the job. however, the most easiest part of the job is interacting with customers who are extremely -
Pros
You could not work specific hours if you don't want to.
Cons
No breaks, unrelaxing environment when busy, you cannot leave the shop floor during the set hours for a drink or the toilet.

Fun place to work.
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Essex - September 16, 2018
Starting of in sports direct is pretty bad but once you get people within your team that you can have a joke with and aim for goals together then thats mainly what the sales are about and battling each other to get the highest KPI of the week or month.
Very good place to learn the ways of sales. Even if you are just selling plastic bags for £1 and insoles for £5
Pros
0 hour contract don't have to accept work if I didn't want to
Cons
Low pay but then again I was 16-17

Unreliable Company
Casual Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Cheshire - June 25, 2018
Cancelling shifts and not introduced to any members of the team at all. Often left on your own to deal with things. I was often running out of things to do and continually just wanted to be home.
Pros
Commission available

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Lancaster - January 12, 2018
I had an amazing experience working here. All the staff were amazing and friendly, it was just your pay that let the job down. 0 hour contracts for all part time staff.

Its a good place to start
Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Salisbury - September 1, 2017
It's a good place to start. The Salisbury branch has a welcoming team that show the basics and get you up through the ranks. The only down side is the benefits you get from it, well aren't really there.

Fun workplace and friendly atmosphere
Casual Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Whitelel Village - December 25, 2016
It was a nice experience working with other people and serving customers regularly. I learned how to serve customers face to face and offer good customer service. The management offered good support in showing the basics of the job but then I managed to blend it perfectly. The staff where really nice and helpful. The hardest part was doing stockroom duties, and I really enjoyed serving customers to their satisfaction.
