it was good for the most part
Correctional Officer (Former Employee) –  Chesapeake, VAJanuary 1, 2018
it was great for the most part. you do spend half the year there so you will have to get used to that. I loved it but you'll have to wait a year for your full salary pay. The academy was good as well

all fun and games until you make a mistake
LPN-Armor Correctional (Current Employee) –  Chesapeake, VASeptember 18, 2017
Management is only really concerned about passing audits. Working in an audit centered environment is terrible. There is high expectations on never making a mistake. If one is made but caught by you, you are still punished. If management messes up, nothing ever happens. You will be in trouble for the same things they do, but you will have consequences. Very high school like environment, with people constantly talking behind each others' backs.
Pros
free meals, good conmpensation
Cons
make sure to fight for good pay on hire because it never goes up much. Terrible management.

-Management was fair
-there is room for job advancement but not much of a pay increase.

Work there for almost two years. Never had any meeting with treatment staff. As new policy and procedures came out there was little training provided which lead to people making mistakes and then people cleaning up their mistakes. They never hold staff accountable for their actions. Flexible time off was a plus
Pros
Flexible time off
Cons
No team work

I enjoy working here. Some days it is long and drawn out but you learn a lot throughout your day. Great way to gain experience and gain great benefits.

Not everyone is built for this type of work
Correctional Sergeant (Former Employee) –  Chesapeake, VADecember 31, 2015
It is want you make it. The pay is okay but for the type of different attitudes and situations that can occur the pay sucks. You work at least 6 months out of the year. Which isn't bad but the it's very stressful on not only yourself but your family. The benefits are good for a state job. There's room for advancement especially if your in the clique, or a yes man. The only way to truly move up fast is being able to travel and work at other institutions. Supervisors you need to watch your back because they soon for where they came from. I can't respect a supervisor that don't know what they're doing, or got the position because he's in the clique and last that's not willing to get in the trenches with his or her staff.
Pros
Free lunch, plenty of overtime, formed long lasting bonds
Cons
Not allowed to leave for break, during in service you have to wear your uniform, pay sucks for the amount of time you are away from your family

I work with offenders returning to society and help them to learn how to lead a productive life. I have learned how to deal with people from every type of life. The management is not bad there are prose and con everywhere a person works.

The institution is supposed to represent a a "Healing Environment"', although often the atmosphere seems to be the oppostite. However, within four years I will say that my employment here has been satisfactory.
