Cashier and Sales Associate in Sterling, VA

Great place for part time work.
Great place for part time work. Staples closed the store location that I worked at for part time work. Great group of employees and bosses. Didn't mind working late. Comparable salary for part time retail.

I loved working at staples. The people were great and the management was very accommodating. Scheduling changes often and you are not guaranteed a certain amount of hours.

..like any job really. The people, the culture, the coworkers are all amazing and make it fun. But the pay isn’t nearly what it should be for what they’re expecting out of you, and they don’t seem to care.

The day to day job was easy. Mostly just take care of the customer, and everything goes fine. Metrics are easy, customers are nice, and managers are generally pretty good to work with. Customer Satisfaction Surveys, Service plan sales, and making money are the only priorities. There is definitely a communication gap between upper management and associate level. Many associates did not even know Staples was rebranding until the t-shirt showed up. The store does have regular staffing issues, and will go months without filled management positions, or using temporary managers from other store. Most of the time it feels like the store is understaffed. Simple in-stock process just would not get done because there was nobody to do it. Managers tend to work on their own, even with other managers in the building. They all have their own tasks they need to take care of and would focus on that rather than the store. The store needed overtime regularly but could not get it, and would fall behind in regular daily processes, sometimes only doing them weekly. Manager training is mostly baptism-by-fire style, and they rely heavily on the managers leaving to train the next guy, if there is one. Job security for managers is just not there. They let people go on a whim or push them out without a backup plan. Shoplifting is also a huge problem for the company, and they only have one guy for the whole district to stop it. LP does not visit the stores and is only there to enforce internal issues. There are a few stores with huge shrink problems, and the company just lets it keep happening. Employee safety seems to be lower on the list than the cost of a security guard. The stores are generally a good and friendly place to work, otherwise.

It’s a good company to work for but it’s a very stressful job lots of pressure from customers and management to meet numbers and deadlines. Good pay, but super stressful.
