Starbucks selected this as a representative reviewI really loved working Starbucks even though it was a little stressful, it balanced out. I love the customers and my team was great! I worked there for several years and I really loved it. Plus the perks and the benefits that came with the job we're really awesome. I would go back and work there again if I had the chance.

Typical Day - Well oiled machine - deepen a sense of humanity
Barista (Former Employee) - Los Altos, CA - September 19, 2023
Being a barista's most enjoyable part was connecting with our customers and making them feel a sense of belonging and family - remembering their names and unique drinks and anticipating the needs of fellow partners and managers. We got lucky to have worked under a great Store Manager. Change in management can have quality challenges, and culture can shift, making people want to leave, but this is an excellent opportunity to allow for grace. The previous SM knew us and became a supportive leader - he didn't look down on baristas - embodied inclusiveness and diversity and was empathic and compassionate. A typical day at work is in a well-oiled machine -- no matter what, the day may "appear" chaotic, but somehow we make it work. Most rewarding was being able to serve during the global pandemic and got to be part of a great team. I learned to appreciate working as a barista and being respectful as a customer. Grief for the death of family members is there. However, it is still evolving for people with animals as part of their family (pet parents) - an excellent opportunity to deepen a sense of humanity. If you want to deepen your understanding of humanity, see how working at Starbucks makes you appreciate life even more.
Pros
Free food and drinks; Headspace, Spotify, healthcare benefits when you work minimum required weekly hours
Cons
Quality of management varies, Short breaks, Treatment of bereaved animal parents is a learning opportunity, work-life balance depends on the values of management

Overall Good College Job
Barista (Former Employee) - Clearwater, FL - September 19, 2023
Great benefits for employees, but hard to find a good manager that defends employees over profits. It's a fantastic first job. Learn how to interact with lots of people, and get college help.

Awful
Barista (Former Employee) - Northampton, MA - September 19, 2023
This was my least favorite job ever. Standing all day. Getting barked orders at 6 am. So many drinks to learn . Being by myself after only a few trainings.

Having great peers doesn't make up for systemic flaws
Starbucks Barista Trainer (Current Employee) - Miamisburg, OH - September 19, 2023
You experience will truly depend on your manager and how long after COVID you have entered into your role. The only upward mobility is to become a shift supervisor who effectively runs the stores while Managers sit back in meetings and don't do much on the floor. Sometimes promotions go to people who are strong employees but lack in leadership, while others are given leadership because they have a pulse. Managers have a scaled bonus based on how much labor they use and it directly results in management short staffing their employees. Your workplace culture can be a mixed bag but it is a very LGBT+ friendly environment with predominantly a younger group mostly college and people in their 20s with an unfortunately high turnover due to poor working conditions
Pros
Free Coffee, Free Therapy, Free Bachelors Degree (if you don't already have one), LGBT friendly, part time health insurance benifits
Cons
10 minute breaks, staff leaning, inconsistent hours, poor management, high turnover of employees

Fast-Paced and Fun workplace
Batista (Former Employee) - North Dakota - September 19, 2023
I loved working here. There was a very young dynamic at my store and it made me look forward to working as everyone was friends. The pay was quite low, but I also worked in a town where the COL is low as well. Overall, highly recommend it!

Stressful job
Shift Supervisor (Former Employee) - Fort Worth, TX - September 19, 2023
Labor cuts were atrocious. Concerns were swept under the rug. Stressful and not worth the stress. I was billed for almost a year and nothing was done.

Good people, but hard work
Barista (Former Employee) - Beach Grove, IN - September 18, 2023
I loved the people I worked with, but it is non-stop work due to constantly being busy compared with what you are being payed. Scheduling was for the most part fair.

Fast Paced and Team Oriented
Assistant Store Manager (Current Employee) - Tucson, AZ - September 18, 2023
Great company to work for. They offer competitive benefits, median pay for the position with opportunities to grow if you want to promote. Only downside is having to be available 24/7 , you are running a business after all.

Hit or Miss Job
Shift Supervisor (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - September 18, 2023
Everything about working at Starbucks is hit or miss. The benefits are great, but the pay is not worth the trouble in most areas. I was most recently working in a major city where I was luckily making enough to live on about 35 hours a week, however those hours are not guaranteed and can be tricky to navigate slower seasons, and in my original city, I was paid abysmally. In my experience, I've faced racial micro-aggressions from a lot of people in management across the various locations I've worked in, even with me being part of management. The culture of working in a coffee shop does allow you to make great connections with coworkers where possible, but when tension arises, it can also make it very difficult.
Pros
Benefits (Insurance, paid tuition, free food/drinks on the clock)
Cons
Management, fluctuating hours

Hard Work
Barista/Cashier (Current Employee) - New Jersey - September 18, 2023
Working at a really busy Starbucks is hard work. Most customers are great. There is a lots to learn, after a years there i still don't know it all. My store is constant chaos. I love being busy at work, so it has been great, but it a lot after a while. Great benefits if you work at least 20 hours a week.

Great Job for College Student
Shift Leader (Former Employee) - Mission Viejo, CA - September 18, 2023
Benefits and pay are great for entry level work. Part time schedule flexible for students. Environment can be stressful and very corporate when there is an issue, but overall if you show up on time and do not call out, there will never be an issue.

Fun workplace
I enjoy connecting with a diverse pool of people from my co-workers to guests, although, with any job, it has its difficulties. The majority of issues cannot be helped when they happen and are resolved quickly by management. I work at a busy store so it can be stressful, but overall a great place to work.
Pros
Free drinks when you work, free food and coffee bean markouts, amazing insurance benefits, free Spotify and Headspace subscriptions
Cons
Pretty short breaks, understaffed so the work can get a little unmanageable, the customers too.

However, we understand that peak hours can become challenging, and strive to provide the resources our teams need to excel during these moments. Great for part time
Barista (Current Employee) - St. Louis, MO - September 18, 2023
Overall it is a satisfactory place to work. It’s busy, so guaranteed some hours however if your looking for full-time, the job isn’t really worth it.
