Great Place to Work
Senior Business Analyst (Former Employee) –  New York StateMay 11, 2019
Starr is a great place to work for motivated people looking to work hard.
Pros
Small company means lots of opportunities to be noticed and rewarded for effort
Cons
A clear succession plan needs to be known as the CEO is over 90

Old School Good Ole Boys Club
Underwriting Assistant (Former Employee) –  New York, NYApril 11, 2019
Nepotism is rampant from the top down. It is not uncommon to see family members within the same department. Promotions based on who you know, physical assets and/or flirting rather than intelligence and a good work ethic. It is very much a "whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" if you want that promotion.
Pros
Good work experience
Cons
Nepotism, Sexism, Favoritism

This is a great place if you strictly want to work a rigid 9 to 5.
That's the only perk... or is it, you will get written up if you haven't logged in at 9:02am....

It's a very toxic environment from the top down. Their business practices are very archaic and they lead by fear and intimidation. If you ever wondered what it was like to work in the 1950s, go work at Starr. It is definitely the Anti-thesis to trending company cultures of open door policies, diversity, inclusion and encouraging innovation.

If you are in anyway innovative, don't go there.
If you are intelligent and want to implement your ideas, don't go there.
If you don't mind getting constantly disrespected to earn a check you can earn anywhere else... well you found a winner.

People who been at the company for 5 years or more leave the company with only 2 days notice or non at all. Avoid at all costs. Anywhere can pay you as much as they'll pay if not more with less stress.
Pros
decent pay, 9 to 5 (with caution), decent benefits
Cons
No raises, Verbally abusive managers, Highly stressful environment, tone deaf leadership to current cultural climate

Underwriter Services Technician (Current Employee) –  Philadelphia, PAJanuary 22, 2019
I was only there as a temp employee, but I felt welcomed and a part of a team. It was sad that the assignment ended as I could've seen myself working there on a permanent basis

No Real Advancement Opps
UNDERWRITING ASSISTANT (Current Employee) –  Atlanta, GADecember 2, 2018
There isn't room for advancement. There is a lot of turnover in just about every department. Pay doesn't equate to the work load. There is no training. There are processes we are all responsible for and are required to follow but people don't. Lack of communication w/i the company which causes confusion.
Pros
Location in a nice area
Cons
Lack of advancement

Relaxed friendly people but there is slight nepotism
Temporary Receptionist (Former Employee) –  New York, NYOctober 8, 2018
Everyone is genuinely friendly, but the Facilities team is slow to bring correction to the serious problems their friends are causing and would rather blame others for their forgetfulness
Pros
friendly people

If you are interested in various types of property-casualty insurance and the nuances of what goes into a claim from first notice of a loss for an insured company to the closing of the file in the company's database, this may be a industry you enjoy.

Intern (Former Employee) –  Atlanta, GAMarch 19, 2018
I was an intern at Starr. I got to learn about the company and what it is like to work on a day-to-day basis. It was good experience to learn about how a commercial insurer operates.

Loved my time at Starr, I was a BA with a team of 4 people. I really enjoyed working with each one of them and I really appreciated the job culture and the management style that I was exposed to.

A Job Not A Career
Underwriter (Current Employee) –  New York, NYDecember 17, 2017
Starr provides no platform for an employees sense of overall meaning and contribution to the organization. Senior management has zero engagement with the employees of the organization. There is no identifiable culture present.
Pros
Great on the job learning given the absence of efficient systems and technologies.
Cons
There seems to no apparent future perpetuation plan for the organization.

Entrepreneurial focus, but...
Regional Manager (Former Employee) –  Region (not in NYC)December 8, 2017
Entrepreneurial focus, but very political with spotty senior management support. They used to be a rather flat org, however last few years seem to be hiring more managers. Systems are an afterthought (every unit had their own, so manual/ad-hoc report requests from senior management is the norm).

Financial Analyst (Current Employee) –  New York, NYNovember 13, 2017
Starr is still under the helm of Hank Greenberg which means things are still very old school. Professional dress and extremely high expectations. The culture isn't very friendly.
Pros
Good location in the city, Midtown East
Cons
Bad culture
