Teacher/Instructor in Alton Community Unit School District #11
on April 3, 2014
The biggest and best industry in the area. The teachers are hard-working and conscientious. The administrators seem to do their best with the resources they have.

Horrible work life balance 16-12 hour shifts multiple times during work week. Benefits and pay good but not good enough to put up with overtime. I was unaware of a process called bumping by union coworkers when hired. I took day shift job was bumped to seconds. This job was so mentally challenging. Terrible environment.

Working for the state will make you mentally ill no joke. If you are disabled you will be made fun of by management. Not worth sanity what so ever....
Personal Assistant in Arlington Heights, IL

There is no one to contact when I injured myself in the job. I jumped through hoops and hired a lawyer just to get medical treatment. They denied my claim stating I was a contract employee but I received W-2s. The state doesn’t even know their employees. The union however is very supportive and engaged.
Correctional Officer in Peoria, IL
on September 24, 2021
Spent 25 years with IDOC and over all it was a great experience. You and your co-workers will be like family (at least while you are on shift). I held correctional officer and correctional resident counselor 1 and correctional counselor 1 and 2 positions. Each one was challenging and I never had any problems that could not be solved with the proper enthusiasm and work ethic, Current administration is currently focused on minority and female hires however that should not dissuade anyone from following this career path.
