Typical Corrections job

Not a bad place to work overall. You can make good money with overtime. As other reviews have stated, promotions are based on how well you are liked, not by if you are most qualified for the position.

Productive and Fun Workplace

Great People, trying to help people of VT. Bureaucratic. Use Telework as a carrot and punitive action of making personnel commute to an empty office for a couple late deadlines.

Good place to work

Decent pay and great benefits. There are pay raises every year and you get most major holidays off. Always paid overtime if working more than 40 hours in a week.

The good boys club

If the supervisor doesn't like you then good luck advancing they will give the spots to their buddies with less seniority than you and put them in spots they know nothing about. I'm an EMT and they gave the cpr instructor spot to someone who only learned cpr in the academy and had only been there like 3 months

Pros

Pay

Cons

Everything

Employer of last resort

Total disconnect between what the State of Vermont represents itself to be as an employer and the employee experience. Work is mindless and unrewarding. Shockingly disorganized system reminiscent of the 1990s and employees who have no desire to change or modernize.

Pros

Montpelier is a great location

Cons

Culturally bizarre

Great place to work

The State has a great mission to serve Vermonter's and the people who do it are awesome. A great place to work. Benefits are good pay can be slightly less than private company but guaranteed raises due to union.

Too many Chiefs, not enough Indians

Way top heavy with management and supervisors that get promoted so that people can move them out of their area.Heard of a "Post Turtle"? No one knows how they got there.

Traumatized and ticked off

Middle management has no clue how to manage. They get promoted because they’ve been there x number of years. Employees are like robots just trying to get through their day.

It is a goal oriented exercise in teamwork.

Amazing people, always too much work and not enough resources

Work environment is mostly remote and flexible, currently. The people there are amazing, passionate, dedicated, but there is always too much to do and not enough resources to accomplish the work.

Good place to work

Great benefits and room to advance. The ability to work from home at times was nice. Can be very stressful at times but what job can't? Overall a good place to work.

Workplace

They want reboots not people. They are really fast to fire when things don’t go right and they don’t like how it is ran. They are quick to jump at everything

I went from being the Star Child to the loser of a witch hunt, twice.

What is the best part of working at the company?Possibilities are good if you can play the game, I couldn’t but wish I could. If you want to coast that is good and if you want to succeed, you better be pretty much perfect. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Having a personal life that is conducive to putting work first and foremost. I couldn’t but wish I could have. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?I had some awesome years here and some terrible. State government has a long way to go to being a healthy environment overall. Individual depts can be great but the overarching theme is government. UghWhat is a typical day like for you at the company?Because of who I am, no day is ever typical. Whether it is of my creation or not.

Interned, great support

Interned at the consumer assistance program and it was a really great learning experience. You learn a lot about how small government works and you get to help people everyday with their issues

Pros

amazing staff

Cons

none

Great position.

I loved the position, however the commute was long, especially in the winter months. The employees were great, however, when I was called to work for another company which was closer to home with a large salary increase, I couldn’t refuse.

Pros

Lots of holidays.

Cons

The commute

locked the doors at 930 pm

Correction officers were difficult to get along with. No freedom to do as you wished. Always had a cellmate, no privacy never alone. Food was ok though. pretty good meeals for the holidays. If you misbehaved you went to solitary confinement

Pros

everything was free

Cons

no freedom of movement

Terrible Training, Clicky Co-Workers

I started working here digitizing all the paperwork from the retirement department. I was given almost no training except for how to use the scanner. I was told how to categorize basic documents, but most of the documents were not basic, and instead of giving me some more training on how to categorize them, someone came in behind me to clean up the ones I had incorrectly categorized. I was introduced to anyone who was a new employee, but because I sat in a room all by myself, no one ever remembered my name.Management was good, my boss was very understanding and helpful when she was available. The other employees seemed very clicky and since I was only there a little short of 2 years I never felt very included, the people I (rarely) talked to would talk about other people and say some pretty harsh and rude things about them. The hardest part of the job (for me) was the isolation. The best part of the job was the Employee appreciation days and the office parties. We would play Jeopardy and they would buy everyone lunch from nice places near the building.

Pros

Good pay, Employee appreciation days, Office parties

Cons

Clicky co-workers, Isolation, No Training

Great coworkers, mediocre management

Ok place to start a career, but nothing I’ll want to stay in long term. Benefits are decent and coworkers are great, but inexperienced people get promoted to manager, and favoritism plays a role in promotions. Good place to start and get experience if you’re new to the working world, but don’t expect a lot of opportunities for growth.

Steady work, poor pay, limited advancement potential

Stepping stone for better opportunities outside of government work. The work schedule is pretty flexible, although really need a second job to make ends meet.
