Physically Demanding Job, Low pay, High expectations
Public Safety Officer (Former) (Former Employee) –  Public SafetyAugust 23, 2019
The work is demanding at times and knows virtually no limits. Whatever the situation requires Public Safety officers must be willing to accommodate from plunging toilets to managing mentally unwell and often suicidal students to complex traffic accidents and student injuries. Most work is done outdoors in extreme heat and cold and many hours in golf carts take a huge toll on your back and neck. Prepare for many miles of walking and dozens of flights of stairs each night followed by complex student and parent interactions followed by technically demanding report writing requirements. Transporting students via golf cart around campus is non-stop until 2-3 am. Dealing with sick and intoxicated students is a common occurrence. Hours are 6pm to 6am and only 30 minutes are allotted for a working meal breaks along with a single 15 minute personal break per shift. Plan on working for more than a year before day shifts may become available - and even still, occasional returns to night shift work are frequent and required to meet minimum staffing requirements. Overtime is mandatory and there is quite a bit of it. You will earn roughly 10 days off per year between sick and vacation however more than 15 additional shifts per year will be mandatory to cover campus sporting and social events resulting in a net positive with respect to time off. Pay is low and non-competitive (around 11.00 per hour) and there is zero opportunity for career advancement within the department. Expect pay checks around 600 every two weeks after deductions. In summary, not a job for the faint of heart...  more... Ideal candidate loves to work, loves to serve, has a great personal composition but does not need substantial financial compensation. If you or your child does not benefit from the tuition waiver, chances are this is not the right job for you. Great people, working hard every day... but at times one of the toughest jobs there is. Approach the position knowing exactly what it is and you'll do great, enjoy the work, and enjoy the people. This is not an environment that is subject to change though...  less
