Great Place
Director of Education, Instructor (Former Employee) –  Poughkeepsie, NYMarch 9, 2018
I learned about the after school and summer activities that parents and students have at their finger tips. The Sylvan Method is extremely successful with getting students up to grade level in all subjects.

Sylvan is a great place to work after school. They strive to meet the needs of every student who walks through the door which became my own mission as a teacher.

Family oriented environment
Director of Education (Former Employee) –  Corpus Christi, TXMarch 5, 2018
My time at Sylvan was wonderful. I was able to build many relationships with families and staff. On average I worked 40, plus hours however the work was enjoyable. It is a fast paced environment and requires some sales however if you love to help children and provide advising, the sales aspect will come naturally.

Great Job
Beginning Reading Teacher (Former Employee) –  Al AsimahFebruary 28, 2018
The environment is fast-paced but a lot of fun. As a tutor, you get to work with a variety of students and a wide range of materials. If you're a classroom teacher it gives you the opportunity to work with students in different grade levels, and material that you may not get to teach every day.

Pay rate low
Tutor (Current Employee) –  VirginiaFebruary 27, 2018
Only $12.75 an hour with no bump for standardized test prep. They run a three-child model at a time; no one-on-one tutoring. Main competitor is Huntington Learning Centers.

Poor management
Instructor (Former Employee) –  Greenville, NCFebruary 27, 2018
Management is not fair or understanding to the concerns and needs of the staff. Also, management doesn't allow adequate teacher to student time. The placement a teacher with students in 3 different age groups is difficult. For example a 2nd grader, 7th grader and 12th grader are all with the same teacher, at the same time. Making a profit is very important, but the students and the teachers are being short changed. The parents are being charged a huge amount of money per hour and the teachers are being paid a small amount of money while they are helping 3 students.
Pros
The students are great.
Cons
Management is awful.

Reading/Writing Instructor (Former Employee) –  Albany, CAFebruary 17, 2018
Helped kids with reading. I went to different sites. The kids were from all walks of life as well as the staff and everyone was required to do their job to the best of their ability.

Great Starting Job for Teachers
English and Math Tutor (Former Employee) –  Puyallup, WAFebruary 11, 2018
If you are still substituting and need extra income Sylvan Learning Center is a great place. For one, they only take certificated teachers, so you have a good chance of getting hired. Also, their hours are after school and during summer (if desired), so this allows for a supplement to your regular teaching job. Lastly, they really appreciate their teachers and give treats, celebrations, etc.
Pros
Flexible hours
Cons
Pay could be a bit higher

Turn Over Rate Is High
Tutor (Current Employee) –  Cookeville, TNFebruary 7, 2018
Poor management, bad customer service skills, no training, only part time, no benefits, limited hours open, last minute call schedule changes.
Good work for tutors if you don't mind the hours and need a little extra money on the side.

Amazing place to work with youth.
(Teacher) Taught reading comprehension and math (Current Employee) –  La Mesa, CAFebruary 6, 2018
Sylvan learning center is an amazing place to work with young people. The center is at its best when the only sound heard is silence from students focusing on their work. The most difficult part of the job is keeping some students from talking and arguing with one another because they are sitting very close to each other. Seeing how my managers would come around to the various tables and talk with disruptive students taught me the level of confidence needed to control students emotions during study time. I would recommend the center to any parent looking to challenge their children in their studies and work on diminishing the difficulties.
Pros
Great smiles from every student
Cons
Great teachers leaving

Recruiter (Former Employee) –  Columbus, OHFebruary 5, 2018
As a recruiter for a franchise owner, I can say the teachers are grossly underpaid. I do not know about the corporate because my experience was only with the one franchise owner.

Gave good experience working with kids
Math Tutor (Former Employee) –  Medina, OHFebruary 5, 2018
Sylvan is a tutoring company. The job required you to tutor 3 kids at one time. This was challenging. You had to keep detailed paper work on each child. One perk was when you checked the homework of a child, and watched his/her reaction when you gave him/her a good report.

Teacher for Mathematics (Former Employee) –  Lubbock, TXJanuary 31, 2018
Working at Sylvan is easy to balance with one's schedule. Additionally, building children's confidence in academia is endlessly rewarding, and the management was very thoughtful and dedicated to the Sylvan mission.

productive, one-on-one style, organized schedule, after school hours
Math and Reading Tutor (Former Employee) –  Frederick, MDJanuary 30, 2018
It was a nice, quiet place to work and study one-on-one with students for an hour, even though the hour went by quickly. You could see the results as the days went on. The kids were usually respectful and the staff was very helpful. There is a lot less stress than in a regular class room.
Pros
less stressful than classroom, working one-on-one
Cons
You only got an hour with each student.
