Students Last. Period.
Teacher (Current Employee) - Syracuse, NY - September 21, 2023
The only reason teachers aren't last in the priorities of the district is because they have to pay us. Otherwise, children are last. Period. Central office administrators think that punching down on the teachers will somehow create a culture of respect and learning.

What people like
- Ability to meet personal goals
- Feeling of personal appreciation
- Ability to learn new things
It was a shockingly painful experience, do not take this job if you have a genuine desire to teach anything.
Substitute Teacher (Former Employee) - Syracuse, NY - September 18, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? They don't really want you to do anything except sit there and take the students' abuse and disrespect. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The students are animals at worst and dolefully under prepared for their grade level at best. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? They allow free use of the N word toward each other and substitute teachers. Take it from there. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Pretty darn awful. No support for subs, no protection even against physical threats.

Good Part-time Job
Lifeguard (Former Employee) - Syracuse, NY - July 27, 2023
I was a lifeguard and a student at SCSD at the same time. Enjoyed it. At the time I was paid quite a bit above minimum wage so I appreciated that. Schedule worked well with my classes.

Unsatisfied
Teacher (Current Employee) - Syracuse, NY - June 2, 2023
I do not feel that this district cares about many of its employees and the turn over rate is astronomical! The students are disrespectful and are pushed through regardless of their attendance or ability to preform grade level tasks.

Overworked
English Teacher (Former Employee) - Syracuse, NY - January 11, 2023
SCSD is one of the highest paying districts in Upstate NY. However, there is no work life balance and the union does not look out for the staff. There are no realistic expectations. The buildings are unsafe. You’re all alone.
Pros
Salary

So grateful for my job, it's the best!
Substitute Teacher K-12 (Current Employee) - Syracuse North side - January 8, 2023
I love my job the people I work with and for are AMAZING!! I feel appreciated and supported. The students can be difficult sometimes but that's the job. I wish there was better consequences for the students as poor behavior isn't getting better bc of lack of consequences. This isn't fair to other students and hard on teachers and staff. Overall it balances out and still is the best job ever. Being able to support and teach our youth is such a gift and honor.
Pros
The positive connections
Cons
Long late days, no consequences for poor behavior

2 stars
Teacher (Current Employee) - Syracuse, NY - January 4, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Making connections with the kids and watching them grow. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Dealing with unruly students. When you send them out, they’re sent right back and still exhibit the same behavior. It makes it hard for the other students to learn. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Diverse and the environment depends on the people. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Depends, you can have some good days, and then you can have some bad days.

Even though we work independently..we still have to do our jobs so other people dont have to take up the slack and some people are lazy so it makes your job a little harder What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Layed back to a certain extent What is a typical day like for you at the company? Set routine...work smart..do what you can but do your best

Payroll Clerk (Current Employee) - Syracuse, NY - November 29, 2022
Great place to work. Great people. Good management. I would say that this job could be done remotely but we are still required to work in the office.

Poor, dishonest and ineffective leadership
Teacher (Former Employee) - Syracuse, NY - October 18, 2022
Highly dysfunctional, dishonest, does not always have the staff and students best interest at heart. There are many who work hard trying to do what is right for students, but you must not report and bring a negative light to the district. It's always better to sweep things under the rug.
Pros
Students
Cons
Poor Leadership

Corruptness
Teaching Assistant (Former Employee) - Syracuse, NY - October 12, 2022
The Teachers are not there for the students, The teachers are worst then the students. The school district is now so desperate that they are hiring anyone off the streets. I feel bad for the students.

Vocational Food Service Education Instructor (Former Employee) - Syracuse, NY - September 14, 2022
My favorite job of my life. My boss was super and let me write my own program. I taught Foodservice and cooking to inmates at the justice center. We cooked over 1000 meals a day.

Worst Employer Ever
Typist (Current Employee) - Syracuse, NY - June 23, 2022
I’ve worked for big and small businesses/organizations. This employer has been a hot mess since I started. There are a lot of politics. If you lay low and are willing to be overloaded with work, you’ll do fine. If your supervisor likes you, you’ll do fine. But if you should happen to have opinions and suggestions on how to improve flow and support families, it’s not going to go well for you. Not all administrators operate like this but too many do. They’re running people out of this school system and it’s sad.
Pros
Pay is decent (after some time) with good benefits. Excellent holiday time off z
Cons
Micromanagement, gaslighting

Lack of integrity and honesty in a stressful, often dangerous work environment
School Administrator (Former Employee) - Syracuse, NY - April 24, 2022
SCSD is in need of organized, motivated leadership on all levels. The tolerance for ineffective school principals, administrative leaders, teachers and ancillary staff is at the core of the districts many problems. The work environment can be dangerous and there is little respect for hard working employees. In fact, it is often considered acceptable to miss copious amounts of work for no reason and there is a lack of integrity and honesty at so many levels. It is incredibly sad for the students and families of SCSD that this low level of expectation permeates the district. I have witnessed SCSD let go of so many strong employees along with not providing opportunities for growth for strong employees. It is common practice to keep highly ineffective employees on staff due to reasons such as race, or the desire to retain employees that grew up or graduated from the area. I resigned from this district due to systemic issues of lack of integrity and honesty along with witnessing the physical and emotional mistreatment of students by principals and teaching assistants that continues to be tolerated. I’ve worked in urban districts for many years and I’ve never witnessed anything like the ineffectiveness of the Syracuse City School District. The community deserves much more. The search for the new superintendent should be far and wide, not internal. Change is urgently needed.

Use this as a stepping stone, but if you care about actual teaching, look elsewhere.
Teacher, Grade 9-12 (Former Employee) - Syracuse, NY - January 22, 2022
Pays starting teachers well, because they work starting teachers to the bone, then discard them before tenure (even during Covid), and repeat. Use this as a stepping stone, but if you care about actual teaching, look elsewhere. Students are numbers. The only thing that matters is your attendance and passing rate - if you want to be true to your calling as a teacher OR if you want to follow the state's guidance on what constitutes passing any course.... DO NOT invest here.
Pros
high starting salary
Cons
2-week mandatory unpaid orientation before or after starting, No real care for education standards or how students will fare after graduating, Positive evaluations are meaningless, you must pass enough (possibly failing) students to stay.

Amazing job but poor pay
Special Education Paraprofessional (Current Employee) - Syracuse, NY - August 29, 2021
One of the better jobs I had just wish they paid more for the work we do. Learned a lot of teaching methods. The pay isn’t a livable wage so it’s more of a hobby than career.
Pros
Working with children
Cons
Pay
