Employee Testimonial - The Life of a Driver

Our trucks are one of the most recognizable things about Sysco. And behind the wheel of each truck is a driver, an associate who works hard, day in and day out, to deliver products to some of our 650,000 customer locations around the world. As one of the primary faces of Sysco, drivers play an important role in our relationships with customers and the service they receive from us. They are a key ingredient in our “secret sauce” that adds unique flavor and spice to our company.

Jon Sterling is a driver at Sysco Central Illinois. Let's join him as he walks us through a typical day in his life at Sysco.

MORNING

“My day actually begins when some people may be going to sleep! I usually wake up…yes, wake up…around 12:30 a.m. I get dressed, grab a cup of coffee and head to work. I’m a morning person, so I don’t mind the early schedule. It’s when I’m at my best.

WORKDAY

By 2:30 a.m., I’m well into completing my pre-trip tasks, which includes going through a DOT-regulated check list to ensure my truck and trailer have been inspected, getting my customers' invoices for the day, reviewing my route, etc., and then I'm on the road. Safety is always a priority when you’re driving as much as I do.

I handle big routes, so I have to stay organized. In my mind, that’s key! If the back of my trailer is a mess, so is my day.

Aside from being safe and staying organized, our customers are what makes my job great. Of course you experience issues, but it’s the relationships that you build that make it all worth it. When you see folks week after week, they become family. Our customers appreciate the service we provide and our partnership to help them run successful businesses.

Once I’ve made all my stops, I head back to the yard. I complete my post-trip work, which includes completing any customer returns with Driver Check-in, before heading home.

AFTER WORK

My evenings usually consist of time with my family, dinner and household chores before calling it a night. I make it a priority to get enough rest since my day starts so early, and I’m driving most of the day. When I have time, I love to grill and smoke meats with friends and go fishing!

Each day, I show up and try to represent Sysco to the best of my ability. I make sure my customers receive the products they’ve ordered and that they’re satisfied. I’m proud to work for Sysco, and I hope that shows in the service I provide.”
