Nice job security but unfulfilling...

I worked for TSA for almost 5 years and 6 years as a contractor and loved every minute of it. I've made a lot of friend and lost some friends as well. I will forever be grateful for all the memories.

Easy concept work and decent pay

Extremely high levels of stress inflicted by management. You’re likely to be fired or quit within the first 2 years. Extremely high turnover rates. Extremely low morale. I promise you will be wasting your time if you even apply.

Pros

Health benefits

Cons

Literally everything else

Simple job made difficult due to the 100 tier management team.

Inflexible hours. Super high turn over due to management. Alot of depression and suffocation comes with this job. If you want to work somewhere with too many Chiefs and not enough Indians this is the place for you.

Pros

You can get out the house and get paid bi weekly

Cons

Everything else. Wages are low. Government job no GS scale, always furloughed and overworked.

Good starter job

It's good for someone trying to get their foot in the federal door. It's also good for someone who wants full benefits for working part time. The pay starts off okay but is not rewarding in the long run. It's a simple job, but the public doesn't like you. There are chances to move up, but it's more of a stepping stone to other agencies. If you like your immediate coworkers, then the daily work will be bearable. Management varies widely from airport to airport.

Toxic

Managers play favorites, so if their "favorite" did something bad, they would only receive a slap on the wrist. Whereas anyone one else would be written up and berated. Co-workers would form cliques. Treated like dirt by co-workers, managers, and passengers. This was honestly the worst job I ever had, and I dreaded coming to work every single day.

Pros

PTO and sick leave accrues quickly.

Cons

Probation is 2 years long.

Coworkers/management

People you work with (majority) are awesome. Friendships are easily gained and relationships with officers are great. Management is a “who you know” system. All the ones in power are who gets along with each other and friends. Everything that happens, is always on the officers. Management has no care about the working people. Working there 5 years, management will pick tiny things out and make big deals. They will literally hold spots for the people they want. There is no fair promotion. Working hard, extra hours; doesn’t pay off here. It’s a typical federal agency that has a big friend system going on. They have favorites, and if you aren’t one of them, no chance to promote. If you speak against it, management will ride you and try to get you out.

Pros

Federal benefits/ coworkers

Cons

Management and political

Really Good Job Security/Benefits

I have been with TSA for 11 years now advancing from a front-line part-time officer position to management. Nothing at all is perfect with this agency from a long shot. However, looking past the negatives and putting yourself in a position to take advantage of professional opportunities is how you turn that negative into a positive. And to be totally honest...as long as you come to work on time, take pride in doing your job, be respectful to your co-workers and stay under the radar; anyone can have a decent career with TSA because the opportunities are there for the taking. There are many former & present TSA employees that have had their share of disagreements & run-ins with their local TSA management...I had a couple myself. But in my opinion the pros definitely out-way the cons. Some really sound advice when entering the agency...1) Start at a larger airport.2) Learn as much as you can about your position.3) BE A RELIABLE WORKER/OFFICER!3) Apply for promotions as soon as you’re eligible.4) Transfer to a smaller airport once you are comfortable at your position to deal with less passengers/stress.

Pros

Great Health-Dental Benefits & Paid Leave options

Cons

Pay Increases over time & Management communication

Horrible Management and Atmosphere

The management over the last year has become un-ethical and believe that they can do anything they want. Everyone that works there is just another number for them and they do no care about anything but the number of passengers coming through an hour. Every time someone leaves, all of their coworkers congratulate them on getting out of TSA even if the job is a step down from working at TSA. They lose about 15 people for every 2 they hire and at that they only retain about half of the new hires. It is impossible to get any staffing and Management asks for much more with much less.

Pros

Federal Benefits

Cons

Good for getting a jump start to other government jobs.

The overall culture in the urban area airports is broken. It's a serious job, with certain appointed leadership having no background in security-oriented tasks, leaving you with the chance of a manager liking you or not being the determining factor in a possible promotion.

Pros

Jump start to other careers.

Cons

Smoke and mirrors.

Job security

A government job with great benefits. The current pay scale is definitely a problem. Hopefully with time this agency will be brought up to the standards and pay of other government agencies.

Eh

Been here for 3 years would not stay here too long only to get your foot in the door for other government jobs. Run honestly. Management is unfair if you not sucking up to higher management you will notice a difference how your time there will go.

Pros

Benefits are dect

Cons

You will be tested everyday. Potentially get fired for failing a test

A job at the airport

This job is very physically, mentally, and emotionally taxing. Your hours rarely ever change, vacation time is hard to come by, hardly ever a chance to move up the ladder; its not a perfect job, but there are perks. Decent break scheduling, co-workers and higher-up staff are truly altruistic and helpful, and the benefits are also great. Unfortunately, management is kind of harsh. They claim that they don't care about the wait times on the passenger line, and ask you to screen at your own pace, but if you're too slow; they claim you aren't efficient. If you somehow make a mistake while moving too quickly, management also gets upset about it, and threatens termination.

Pros

Great Benefits Package

Cons

Sacrificing your mental well-being

A lot of work but no room for progress

It keeps you busy the days go by fairly quickly but as for the organization it is a mess. No room for career progression, favoritism from the management on up, worker hierarchy between the TSO and those up in the officers managers on up! The pay was cool could be better but it wasn’t equally valued with the labor and safety risks.

Pros

Benefits, extra hours

Cons

Pay, management, worker morale

You’re just a number.

The turnover rate is high for a reason. It’s a thankless job and you’re treated poorly by management and passengers. The only good thing about TSA is that it’s a stepping stone to other federal jobs.

Pros

Paid training in Georgia

Cons

Everything

It’s ight

If you’re under 38 and trying to get into other Fed jobs like CBP or other LEO jobs then it’s good foot in the door, other wise it’s a waste of time. You will be treated with biases and your coworkers will either be ok or awful. Haven’t met a single person at TSA who loves their job, everyone’s trying to claw to the top or get on with another agency.

Pros

Job security

Cons

Management sucks and the employees look down on new hires

Avoid the JFK location at all costs. Management is horrible. When your assigned coaches as a new hire, majority of the time they don’t even want to train you. They will make you do all the work that they don’t feel like doing. In my opinion, TSA is overrated and isn’t worth all of the hassle and nonsense for only $19 an hour.

Pros

Discounts in the airport terminals

Cons

Management, employees, short breaks

Not a bad place not a great place

There is favoritism as with a lot of jobs. Pay is reliable. Management sucks!!!! Policies are always changing but if you like to work with the general public while wedding a uniform and being able to transfer to other federal organizations, then this is the place for you. Easy to take pto and to swap schedules with other officers.

Pros

Salary, pay increases, job security

Cons

Horrible management, constant lies

Agency is scandal ridden

Good luck retaining your job after many months waiting to get hired only to have sadistic colleagues seek ways to get you terminated. Not worth your time, that's the government for you.

Pros

Can be fun part-time

Cons

Government job culture
