Substitute Teaching is a Grab Bag

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
There are a variety of positions available and in high demand. Across the COVID timeline, there were no safety nets for subs besides your unemployment insurance. There's lots of great veteran teachers who sub, but many left during COVID. Kids are like common sense, either you get it or you don't. Then again, it takes a village. Teachers On Call is very user friendly in my experience. If you think you can help out in classrooms, they NEED you. Kids really appreciate people who are there to help out! If you're a stressed out person, make sure you leave it at the door or something and don't take it out on kids! I've seen some stressed out people who should not be working with certain age groups, subs and school employees.

Pick and choose if you want to take it

Pros: you can pick and choose if you want to take the sub position for the dayCons: schools definitely have favorites and teachers on call doesn’t help you make those connections to the schools.

A good place for substitutes

Teachers on Call maintains good communication with schools when submitting/receiving substitute requests. Their job-acquisition website is user-friendly and the change to an online format was a breeze; no more 5am phone calls. Good place!

Great place to work

TeachersonCall is a fantastic place to work. The flexibility and when you are building a family the choices you have to work a day or not is very beneficial.

Productive work place

I find working for Teachers on Call as a building substitute in Denfeld High School somewhat challenging because there are too many building wide substitutes hired for the school I am at and sometimes there isn't enough work so I might be just walking the halls. Otherwise it is okay but there are no benefits. My teachers retirement was taken away when the school district started Teachers on Call.

Good communication

Easy to navigate the system. Good communication, and there are always jobs available. I can prioritize what jobs I want to take, and limit my availability as needed.

Lots of Flexibility

There is great flexibility in selecting assignments based on days and times you are available. You have the ability to choose which school districts you are interested in serving as a substitute teacher in.

Flexibility or Stability, You Choose

I like that with TOC I can either choose my daily schedule in advance using the job site Frontline, or I can commit to one school and have the security and higher pay per day. I have done both and they have their own advantage. The TOC headquarters is always super kind and helpful whenever I call with a question.

Pros

Good per day, flexibility if day-to-day sub

Decent pay and easy job

The biggest difficulty of this job is being very careful in your interactions with people as an educator. The job pays well and is beyond easy. Get a full-time position for even better pay and consistent schedule.

Flexible

The job is flexible; you can pick your own work hours and teaching assignments. It's great for a person who just graduated with a teaching degree and wants to explore different school environments to see the right fit, or if you graduated during the school year and don't want to look for a permanent position because of that.

Flexible hours

Depending on your personal schedule, you can select which assignments you want to take (days, mornings, afternoons, etc). You can also select schools or districts that you prefer to work in.

Substitute teacher

As a substitute teacher you decide when to work. Plenty of opportunities during the school year; not so much in summer. Good communication from management.

Choosing when to work was a big plus.

Flexible schedule. Part-time work, which I needed. The administrators need to be more in tune with working environments. Also, I needed to be cheered on more. There isn't a work culture as I worked in five Districts and there wasn't enough time to get to know the other substitute teachers. The hardest part of the job was knowing the many expectations of teachers and principals while working long-term assignments. The most enjoyable part of the job was inspiring students to learn.

What is the best part of working at the company? You have complete control and flexibility of the assignment you choose, the days you work and the hours as well. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The early phone calls and calls all day long. You have to make sure the volume is down or off especially if working. Other than that, there is no stress! What is the work environment and culture like at the company? You really don't have much interaction with the employees other than those that answer the phone to help you with a question. What is a typical day like for you at the company? If I haven't already accepted an assignment, the phone starts ringing around 5:30 a.m. assuming some assignments have opened up overnight. Choose your assignment and the process starts again around 1 p.m. for the next day.

Great place to work

Getting hired here was a super easy process. They were very open with communication and are always offering virtual classes to learn more and support.

It's all about where you sub.

I am employed by TOC, but am a dedicated building sub at one elementary school. I am absolutely in love with the school, and that is what makes the job so great. I also really like being dedicated to one building because I know the staff, students, school protocol, etc. and they know and trust me. The hardest part of subbing IMO is walking into an unfamiliar environment every morning. Even if you aren't dedicated to one building, leave your business card so teachers can request you again and suggest your name to coworkers. It's much easier walking into a class and building you are familiar with.
