Substitute Teacher (Former Employee) – Glendale, CA – December 27, 2018
You decide if you want to work or not. Assignments are give the night before along with all the important details as far as what subject, time and location. You can decided to take the assignment or not.
Sometimes if you don't get a call the night before, you may receive a call the following morning. You have to be ready to be out the door really early, and sometimes you may not get the call at all.
Work when you want during the week. Regular assignments
No work during any of the holidays or days off, no sick or vacation time.
Substitute Teacher (Former Employee) – San Francisco, CA – October 22, 2018
Good amount of work - won't be full-time. Responded well when I had an issue with a school. Works with really good schools, that I enjoyed coming back to. Was able to secure a full-time position through them.
Guest Teacher (Former Employee) – Los Angeles, CA – September 13, 2018
Worst job I've had. Dispatchers are rude, inconsiderate and do not value your safety or treatment at school assignments. Agency does not treat workers fairly, does not compensate them above the bare minimum required and engages in dangerous work practices such as screaming at teachers while they are driving to their assignments. Dispatchers will be rude waking you up and treated guest teachers poorly on a regular basis.
I'm sorry things didn't work out for you as an employee of TOR. Substitute teaching is not for everyone and we try to make the challenges as clear as possible right up front. The safety of our teachers is a top priority. In 32 years, we've never screamed at a teacher. We only call teachers who list themselves as ready for work. If a teacher doesn't show up as promised, that's unacceptable...and we'll call to find out why. Even then, our job is to remain calm, helpful and reasonable while we sort the situation out.

Great place to work temporarily or permanently
Substitute Preschool Teacher (Current Employee) – Glendale, CA – August 29, 2018
I have worked with Teachers on Reserve between permanent positions. It is flexible and pays more than the average preschool teacher makes. You must be available from 6-9am on the days you have chosen to work. You can choose areas that you want to work in. I try not to limit myself so I get more calls. You can get raises and bonuses.
Substitute Teacher (Former Employee) – Glendale, CA – August 1, 2018
I have worked as a substitute at TOR twice when looking for other work. I have always found the administration to be thoughtful and professional, and the one time I had a dispute with a school, TOR didn't take sides and looked for a reasonable solution.
Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) – San Diego, CA – June 10, 2018
Good Pay. Great service over the phone, its quick. No computer access to attaining jobs, like others. Most enjoyable part is working with students of all ages and being the best teacher you want to be to make them better humans and meet their daily goals.
Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) – Los Angeles, CA – May 3, 2018
The company is great, warm and friendly but without a teacher credential or emergency 30 day permit finding enough work for the week was difficult. In addition not all assignments are for a full day, some are half days leaving you with inconsistent hours.
Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) – Southern California – March 14, 2018
I love my job and I've been treated really well by the folks at the call center. I live in the suburbs of Los Angeles and often have to drive more than thirty minutes to get to a job assignment. Teachers on Reserve makes an effort to place me in a teaching position every day that I make myself available; every once and a while I don't get the call. If you can't handle that you won't like this job. I've let them know how much I love a few of the schools I've worked at and they've gone out of their way to send me back to my favorites, when possible. I appreciate that I can accrue sick pay but the best part of the job is the flexibility. I get to make my own hours.
Professional staff, choose when you work.
no vacation pay, some days you get ready for work but don't get called in.
Substitute Teacher in San Diego CA (Current Employee) – Glendale, CA – March 5, 2018
You can choose the exact hours you would like to work. You can work a few days a week or everyday! The pay is $22/hr for charter schools! The pay is great if you're fresh out of college with no work experience.
Small company doing big things for the educational field.
Substitute Teacher/Dispatcher (Former Employee) – Glendale, CA – February 12, 2018
Teachers on Reserve is a great place to work if you need a flexible schedule. The office staff is very friendly and easy to work with. Working as a teacher is hard these days, but working with TOR is easy.
Guest Teacher (Former Employee) – San Francisco Bay Area – February 6, 2018
if you have nothing else better to do, or just want to get some quick experience in teaching, this company is a good way to break into the field. Don't expect to be able to support a family with the salaries.. No benefits, no advancement, and lots of time spent commuting to and from assignments without pay.
Our current pay rates range from $20 - $31 per hour, depending on the kind of credentials required for each assignment. We give pay raises per number of hours worked and often raise pay rates in addition to that.
"No benefits" is inaccurate. Qualifying teachers get: health insurance, paid sick leave, a 401k plan, long-term & teacher referral bonuses, weekly paychecks, flexible scheduling, direct deposit and the choice of where to work.
Employers DON'T generally pay for employees to drive to and from home but we DO pay teachers for their work day - from start to finish, including lunch breaks.

Supportive and fun co-workers and management
Dispatch Supervisor (Current Employee) – Glendale, CA – September 27, 2017
Though it can get very fast-paced and a bit stressful, the management and employees are extremely kind and supportive and it is a relaxed office environment that feels very familial. It makes up for how tedious and frustrating some of the rok can be.
Substitute Teacher (Former Employee) – San Francisco Bay Area, CA – August 22, 2017
Teachers on Reserve worked so well for me because they allowed you to change your availability to work right up until the moment you were requested for an assignment. At the time I was a graduate student, and this was extremely helpful and conducive to my busy schedule.
Substitute Teacher (Former Employee) – Glendale, CA – June 23, 2017
Teachers on Reserve sent me to many different schools, many of which became favorites for myself and the kids. You can set which days you want to work, dispatch is always kind and professional (even if I didn't think so when their call woke me up at 6 am everyday), and overall, it was a great place to work right after I graduated college.
Teacher's on reserve is a great company to work for.
Substitute Teacher (Former Employee) – Los Angeles, CA – January 6, 2017
TOR allowed me to be able to teach with only a BA. I'm grateful because teaching has been my dream since I was in the third grade. I'm currently studying for the cset so that I can teach at a public school.
