Senior Counselor, Birmingham, AL - February 15, 2017
Teen Challenge is a Christian ministry, not a mental health agency. Salary was poor however they took care of almost everything. They rely on donations (for the most part) but took great care of their staff. The treatment approach is psycho-educational. Clients are counseled by. diversely trained staff. Some of the staff had minimal training in psychology. All the staff had Biblical and Theological training. The program focus was on retraining. The resident's had a variety of behavioral problems including substance abuse, anti-social and criminal problems. I enjoyed the work, esp. the chance to teach. At work counselors were expected to eat, work, play, worship, etc. with the residents. The program is very effective. The opportunity to influence individuals by word and example is very rewarding. The best part of the job was also the most difficult. The intense involvement with the clients!
