Working on Alzheimer’s unit was very difficult. I learned how to better work Alzheimer’s residents. I appreciated that management was approachable and easy to talk to. The hardest part of the job was working day in and day out with Alzheimer’s residents with low staffing. The most enjoyable part of my job was spending time with the residents.

Poorly managed

Very poorly staffed. Often staff and management take advantage of you and you have no recourse. As a part time employee you have to find coverage for your vacation and days off which can be very difficult if you aren’t familiar with all the other part time staff.

Love It

Been here for almost 5 years now. It was the first job I have ever had. Although I have had other jobs after this one I have always come back to work here. I have left for other jobs but always felt like I needed to come back and I did because I love working here. The work environment especially with the people I work with on my floor both the employees and the residents is unlike any other work experience I have had. I feel like everyone on my team works together to put the residents first and get the job done well in a very safe and timely manner. I really feel the people I work with communicate well and we always have fun. No matter how short we are sometimes we always come together and make it work. It almost never feels like a job and I actually enjoy coming in to work. And it’s very rare to find a work environment such as this. The only thing is the pay. I work with it because I like working here very much but it’s low paying compared to my other places of employment. I don’t think I will ever quit. But due to the lower pay it in turn has caused me to reduce my hours greatly. No place of employment is perfect. But when you work with people who are friendly and willing to work as a team and you get to know everybody you work with and grow in the profession it’s a great place to be. I have learned so much and continue to.

Pros

Team Work, Communication, Valuable Learning Experience

Cons

Pay

The employees get along well

I hated it there . They were welcoming , a little rude but consistent. always had to be on top of everything ! There wasn’t anytime for screw ups . I think the only thing I liked was actually working with the tendants .

Pros

Free lunch, nice people, good food

Cons

Short breaks, mean co workers mean tendants

It’s ok

I serve resident meals and clean up afterwards. The workload expected has increased significantly. No support from supervisors. I do love the residents.

Severely short nurses and cna

Horribly short of nurses and cna's. Nurses are forced to pass medications to 40 residents. CNA's often have to care for 9-20 residents. Unsafe environment for residents and staff.

Pros

none

Cons

food is terrible, overworked, under paid, raise only 25 cents an hour

Homelike atmosphere for the residents & single occupancy rooms was helpful in doing my job.

I like working in the Carmelite System because it has an element of personal warmth & kindness. I also think the atmosphere has a less institutional feel to it.

Pros

Free meal

Cons

Short breaks

I felt inferior

It was difficult to return after my boss & friend had passed. She was there for several years. I returned and felt I was doing an very good job -on time- and using my prior long term care experience. I made one mistake in dosage not life threatening at all. I am a cardiac nurse originally and had plenty of experience. I was fired . I had brought my error ASAP to my manager & understandably received a warning. A non life threatening dosage error is not means for firing. It has a new wave culture and they wouldn’t let me fit in. This is so unlike my personality. I get along well with all races. Shortly after my second run there another young friend died. I have the best job ever in primary care. God closed this door & opened a new one

None

Poor management, lack of staffing

Teresian house severely lacks staffing. Most LPNs are from the agency, so continuous care are not at its best because they are unfamiliar of the residents likes and dislikes and routines. Hire more nurses and CNA, fix the management, especially upper management. Don’t let nurses do double units (40 residents: 1 nurse) it is very tiring and proper care won’t be provided. Have qualified personnel to train new staffs and educate them well in handling dementia patients.

Pros

Free meal every shift, can do overtime work and pick up hours

Cons

No break room for each unit/floor, we use the meeting area. Lack of staff, Cna, LPN. Poor management overall. Lack of training for staffs.

It was worth it

I was so lucky to have my first CNA job be at Teresian House. The residents made the job a true joy. I wish everyone had the CNA and LPN coworkers I had on Mt Carmel unit, they taught me valuable lessons in teamwork and flexibility.

Teresian House was a good place to work.

I worked hard at Teresian House and was compensated fine. I liked the benefits that they give the employees. work 8 hours a day cleaning the rooms, washing dishes and help in the feeding. The employees were courteous and helpful to other employees.
