I would reassure field technicians that they are a valuable asset to the company, rather than a necessary evil to be disposed of if their chargeable time gets too low. I would encourage them and assist them with improving their skillsets. I would get them vehicles capable of going onto muddy jobsites.
Set realistic expectations for new employees, rather than telling them what they "could" be doing, tell them what they actually will be doing.
