This workplace was rewarding because you were able to help children and families. Upper management is not always understanding; however, some were very helpful and they cared about their employees.

Child Protective Specialist (Former Employee) –  San Angelo, TXJune 3, 2018
Great job, if you need flexible hours. It is fast-paced work, always changing, but rewarding work to help children and families. Caseworkers attend court and report on the progress of children and families on their service plans. Also, they complete documentation such as court reports, service plans, progress reports.

If you are following a career track this is a good agency to be employed by. Stay out of the office politics to continue to stay in good graces of management.

Good place to get your feet wet
Child Care Licensing Inspector (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXMay 28, 2018
A typical day at work was completing day care inspections , and the occasional investigation. The hardest part of the job is that you are often met with defensiveness from day care centers/directors/owners when you go to investigate/inspect as they do not like being cited for violations. Sometimes they would even try to hide violations or fix them while you were there and deny that there were any violations. You have to document everything, especially with pictures because they will challenge your inspection if they feel that you were unfair. The most enjoyable part of the job is being able to make your own schedule.
Pros
Flexibility/PTO
Cons
Defensiveness of day care centers

Investigator (Former Employee) –  San Antonio, TXApril 16, 2018
I loved the job because, of the hours and work environment. It was a great place to work, as long as you put in the hours on your cases. There was no such thing as a typical day because you were always on the go. You had cases that needed to be looked at, addressed, and worked on.
Pros
Freedom
Cons
Sometimes long hours

Horrible working environment. They recently raised the pay so that is a good thing, but Investigators are overworked so I'm sure they want more for the pay increase.

Workplace - DFPS
Legal Social Worker (Current Employee) –  San Antonio, TXApril 9, 2018
The workplace culture was collaborative and adventurous. We served the underprivileged communities and undeserved and abused children in our city.
A typical day at work could include testifying in court, completing documentation, completing court reports, meeting with court officials, in-agency training, visiting foster homes, jails, or parents. Other days include in office or work from home days to ensure documentation is sufficient and correct, and updated; answering calls and numerous emails.
The most enjoyable aspect of this job is to see your work having a positive effect on families and children so they may lead healthier, more positive lives when the agency is removed.
Pros
Trainings, Work from home, flexible hours
Cons
No set hourly work schedule

It is a very fast paced work environment and feels like the day is never truly over. Most of the day is spent collecting paperwork from perspective adoptive family. Recruiting for children that don't have homes. Adoptions are the best thing about the job. Feels great completing families.

CPS Specialist (Former Employee) –  Dallas, TXMarch 21, 2018
As a CPS Conservator, the job comes with a certain degree of stress and can be fast paced. The management can make or break the work experience; however, I was fortunate enough to have an excellent supervisor. DFPS provides great benefits and there can be a lot of flexibility, which is a plus for the parents out there.

Great Benefits and Flexible work schedule

Can be a high stress job

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT (Former Employee) –  Austin, TXMarch 20, 2018
No advancement without a four-year degree no mater how long I was there. The people were fair enough. My group was smaller than some so we had potlucks every month. I'm not sure if this is the common trend in most state jobs but I think it is not.
Pros
Time off, steady schedule, paid for monthly healthcare premium
Cons
not raises, no help going back to school, no future without a four-year degree
