Good pay, Great benefits, Average to poor work environment
IT Support Consultant (Former Employee) –  Iowa City, IAJuly 29, 2018
Job was focused on being able to not only document your time, but be able to show via reports and records, actual work done during that time. Management was average. Both good and bad supervisors and HR staff. The culture was fine, as in the staff and peers that were worked with were all very good people. The hardest part of the job was finding work that would be approved by upper management. Initially the most enjoyable part of the job was working on new systems and different equipment, but due to the work environment evolving, most of those aspects had been separated out and handed off to different teams.
Pros
Pay, Benefits.
Cons
micro managing. different requirments based on which supervisor.

Valet/Patient Escort - Student Lead (Current Employee) –  Iowa City, IAJuly 28, 2018
Typical days are hectic, but it makes the time go by fast. As a student employee, they are very flexible with balancing a work schedule around class schedules. The management could be better, but they do what they can with what is available from the state budget.
Pros
Flexible scheduling

For incoming freshman the University has great jobs that work around your schedule. They just don't give you that many hours. Days can be stressful but generally they have good jobs.

Usual Day
Revenue Cycle Coordinator (Current Employee) –  Iowa City, IAJune 26, 2018
A usual day working in claims follow up as a supervisor includes time cards, time off and approving those times each day. Attending insurance phone calls, meetings within the hospital with different departments and very little desk time. Spend a lot of time on reports, spreadsheets and trying to get claims paid and finding trends. Emails are about 100+ daily. The job is never done each day and it's an ever changing job.
Pros
benefits, pay
Cons
very stressful with lack of resources, spending time in meetings that we shouldn't be in

Nice place to work
Data Entry Clerk (Former Employee) –  Iowa City, IAJune 16, 2018
The University of Iowa is a good place to work. My time was short there and the benefits weren't provided for temporary employees. I enjoyed the work and the staff. The drive on the interstate everyday was monotonous and costly plus I then had to pay for parking at $1/hour so my pay was cut by that every hour.
Pros
The staff and learning
Cons
The drive and paying for parking

I have had the chance to collaborate with several other scientists and have been given the opportunity to grow as a scientist and a person. The pay is never going to be as good as in industry but the benefits have made up for it in my opinion for many years.

This is a good place to work and would love to continue here but we didn't get grant funding so the gig is up.
Pros
Great benefits, flexible scheduling, oppurtunities for growth
Cons
No security in my position if PI does not secure grant funding

Support Specialist (Former Employee) –  Iowa City, IAJune 2, 2018
I have dealt with some really nasty and difficult co-workers here and difficult bosses. It's cut throat. A lot of manipulative, incompetent people working here just to get the benefits. And the benefits ARE great. Gossip runs rampant! The wrong people are promoted, they need to get their act together and see through the people that are trouble and stop promoting them. Parts of the hospital have toxic mold and is making workers very, very sick and they aren't doing anything about it.
Pros
Benefits
Cons
Micromanaging, gossip, cut throat, old facilities

Ok place to work
Revenue Cycle Representative (Former Employee) –  Iowa City, IAJune 1, 2018
I worked in patient financial services. The pros are great health insurance, and extremely competitive retirement plan. Those are the end of the benefits, no modern benefits like onsite day care, free meals, onsite fitness, no paid parental leave outside of standard fmla, or flexible scheduling. Little to no room for advancement, and the highest level of management has been promoted from within and have been there far to long. No continuing education offered to workers, but management gets training and then is expected to have that knowledge trickle down.
Pros
The best insurance
Cons
No modern amneties
