There are 2 statuses: Exempt and non-exempt. One has a 40 hour limit, then overtime if needed, and the other has no set hourly limit and you get paid your flat salary no matter how many hours you work. Most of the exempt positions (work however many hours) are in research or research support positions where you may be in the middle of an experiment or you may need to come in because, for example, there was a surprise review of some records that you need to be available for to provide any documentation needed, etc. But most non-faculty and admin jobs are 40 hrs.

As many as you're willing to work, if you're exempt. If not, flat 40hrs.
