Great Customer Base
Manager (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILJune 9, 2019
Hands down the best part of the job, is the bond you form with the regular customers. They truly appreciate people will health and wellness knowledge, and want to learn. That said, Vitamin Shoppe is a specialty retailer. Everyone in every store, is over worked, and under payed. A store averages about 5 employees, and managers are salaried. If someone calls in, managers are forced to work open to close without compensation. This also happens if you are short staffed. Managers are welcome to call other managers to come help out, but good luck. Salaried managers don’t want to spend their day off covering your store for free. DM’s, Regional Directors, and Corporate are so out of touch with the retail side. Technology is ancient, and is constantly a problem. Stores keep old cardboard boxes of paperwork like the stores of the 1970’s. Worse is, with all the lack of tech, they want us to sell auto delivery services, so they are garunteed an income. Don’t sell enough, you may lose your job. This is one company that needs to grow up and get with the times!
Pros
Customers, and fellow associates are amazing!

No work life balance

Great products poor management
Store Manager (Current Employee) –  Chicago, ILFebruary 20, 2019
Great environment when you have a good store team. Corporate office out of touch with day to day functions of brick and mortar. They talk about importance of work life balance but tell you to do what it takes to make it happen and don't get any support!

Have to work more hours than they orriginally tell you, without compensation.
Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Chicagoland Area, ILJuly 9, 2018
Told you will be working 45 hours, but rarely ends up less than 50 to 55, making salary considerably less. If they have someone else in mind for your store, ie dm's aquantances, they will start accusing you of nonsense stuff, ie spot on counter, escalate these things until you feel compelled to quit. Happens all the time, many, many veteran, quality store managers are forced out. Absolutely no support from upper management, never knowing when the hammer will drop. No job stability, take a look at the turn over. Chicagoland/Wisc. DM'S are the worst, but company as a whole is a sinking ship.
Pros
Opportunity to help customers
Cons
Uncompensated hours, no dm support, no family/work balance

Assistant Manager (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILJune 27, 2018
A position at the Vitamin Shoppe is not a difficult one. If you have prior retail experience in selling and cross-selling you would be a great fit. If you show commitment it is easy to receive promotions and climb the ladder from store associate to key-holder etc. The stores are small so the number of employees per store are usually about 5 to 6 employees. The hardest part of the job is the cross selling and the most enjoyable part is getting to build relationships with the customers. You get the same customers and are able to assist them to the fullest once you understand their likes and dislikes. The most enjoyable part of the job is finding the products that meet all the customers needs and they let you know how it worked for them.
Pros
Building relationships, health and dental insurance

Store Manager/Recruiter (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILJanuary 29, 2018
Company came in like gang busters. Then the owner sold the company and all the downsizing came about. New DM came in and change a lot. Was asked to leave.

General Manager (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILNovember 24, 2017
Good place to work, would recommend to a friend. Management was great and very helpful. Laid back culture and very good work/life balance. However, sometimes too slow and can be boring.

Learning more about health and wellness through learning more about products, Vitamin Shoppe University, and even interacting with customers. I also enjoyed assisting customers in finding products to help them achieve their fitness goals.

Assistant Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILDecember 5, 2016
This was my first time working retail. Employees are nice and helpful to customers and co-workers and management is easy to approach. I learned about supplements (health and sports), homeopathic and essential oils. The most enjoyable part of the week was processing shipment as it makes the day go by faster and assisting customers and seeing them return because we had gained their trust and business.

When you work with the right people it is a fun job. They provide a lot of knowledge for the wellness industry. The company needs to develop a solid foundation for overall function, instead of worrying about changing their physical appearance.
Pros
benefits and helping people
Cons
No support from upper management
