Stressful management position with constant upper management turnover
Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Albuquerque, NMMay 31, 2019
VS claims to be a collaborative culture but since the CEO change it has been slowly stripped of the customer service culture and replaced with a Walgreens culture of bare bones service and over taxing salaried employees. If you can't get your part time staff and full time hourly staff through background checks that drag on forever. Than salaried management just has to absorb the hours.

The Vitamin Shoppe is a great company to work for. They are supportive and helpful with encouraging others to learn and grow within the company. I would fully recommend a position within the store.

Fun day workin with customer on their wellness journey.
Store Manager (Current Employee) –  Pompano Beach, FLMarch 25, 2019
A typical day at Vitamin Shoppe is to walk the store, address any closing procedures that need to be addressed. Count tills and safe. Make sure store is 100% for customers. Work top stock till 11am, then work with customers on their wellness journey, building baskets, helping customers with product knowledge while having fun. Clean as you go, having active sampling.

Discount

Selling Vitamins and Supplements
Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Erie, PAMarch 8, 2019
Many customers wanted advice on which products they believed were going to provide the most benefits for their situation. This made training crucial. Training was an important part of being able to offer the best customer service. Every day I had to make sure employees were learning about products to help customers. Most of the customers were pleasant because they were proactively trying to improve their health.
Pros
Learning and helping customers.
Cons
The customers assumed we were experts on everything in the store.

Store Manager (Current Employee) –  Chicago, ILFebruary 20, 2019
Great environment when you have a good store team. Corporate office out of touch with day to day functions of brick and mortar. They talk about importance of work life balance but tell you to do what it takes to make it happen and don't get any support!

working at the Vitamin Shoppe was something I did for two reasons. One was to make ends meet and other was to keep a direct/indirect connection to my field.

Not the best but better than most
Store Manager (Current Employee) –  Savannah, GADecember 3, 2018
If you like and live fitness and health this can be a good place to work. However as a manager the hardest part is the staffing; it's a challenge to keep people especially good people. Being a salaried manager means that when someone calls out (like a one MOD shift Sunday) you have to drop everything you're doing to go and cover if nobody else (ie, "hourly employees") aren't willing to grab the hours. As a parent with young children this can be difficult. Most enjoyable part of the job is the interactions you get to have with customers that you get to know and like. They come to you for advice and knowledge and you build good relationships because of that. Can be very hard to maintain a good work/life balance.

Great experience for growth and experience however...
Store Manager (Former Employee) –  San Diego, CAOctober 15, 2018
Constant changes in leadership and new initiatives have most employees overworked and overlooked. 2018 saw no pay increases even with tenured staff. Tech was very outdated. My district manager was exceptional- a mentor and a true leader. Great specialty retailer if you have a vested interest in wellness/nutrition and supplements combined with previous sales experience, however there seemed to be a disconnect between the home office and store fronts.
Pros
Employee discount, flexible scheduling, Pto, opportunities to network
Cons
No pay increase, increased workload, poor planning for new marketing initiatives

Great job if you are passionate about health and helping people.
Store Manager (Current Employee) –  New York, NYSeptember 29, 2018
The workplace is a culture of health and wellness. Like any job, there are highly trained, extraordinary managers that are willing to do whatever it takes to help you succeed, and there is also the polar opposite. The workplace culture is great if you love health and fitness. The hardest part of the job is balancing between various day to day store operations such as balancing payroll expenses, completing rotations, processing shipment, training and developing your team whilst ensuring each customer experience is exceptional in addition to growing your business through grassroots efforts/community outreach. The most enjoyable part of the job is knowing that you made a positive difference in someone's quality of life almost every day.
Pros
Discount on products, flexible work schedule, free training, company culture
Cons
career growth is limited after a certain point, salary could be more competitive

Not the same company anymore
STORE MANAGER (Current Employee) –  FloridaSeptember 18, 2018
I did enjoy working for the Vitamin Shoppe several years ago. I actually felt like I mattered then. Now you are just as indispensable as anyone. They do not seem to value their employees anymore. They say they don't "threaten" you to make sales, but they drive it into your head constantly and make you feel like at any moment, you are done. I understand they have a business to run and requirements to meet, but they are constantly changing policies and rules which makes it frustrating because you never know what is right and wrong anymore.
Pros
Vacation Time, Salary
Cons
Constantly changing policies

Poor culture
Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Hoover, ALAugust 1, 2018
I work for two month. The work life balance was one of the reason I resigned. Routinely, work 50 to 55 hours per week. The work load routinely fell on the store manager to when HE call out or sick. You really are not managing; there isnt enough staff available to manage. Often working shifts 2 to 3 hours by yourself. Gossip is ramped between locations.
Pros
Helping customers. Monthly bonus potential.
Cons
30 minute break each shift. Culture of back bitting.

Have to work more hours than they orriginally tell you, without compensation.
Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Chicagoland Area, ILJuly 9, 2018
Told you will be working 45 hours, but rarely ends up less than 50 to 55, making salary considerably less. If they have someone else in mind for your store, ie dm's aquantances, they will start accusing you of nonsense stuff, ie spot on counter, escalate these things until you feel compelled to quit. Happens all the time, many, many veteran, quality store managers are forced out. Absolutely no support from upper management, never knowing when the hammer will drop. No job stability, take a look at the turn over. Chicagoland/Wisc. DM'S are the worst, but company as a whole is a sinking ship.
Pros
Opportunity to help customers
Cons
Uncompensated hours, no dm support, no family/work balance

Culture Has Changed to a Negative Environment
STORE MANAGER (Former Employee) –  United StatesJune 7, 2018
Company has changed from a customer based business to selling the customers add on's that they are not interested in. Payroll has been cut back. Management is in the store by themselves for hours and when there is theft they are asked why they aren't watching the thieves when there are at least 10-15 customers in the store. It's impossible to watch everyone and ring up customers. The culture has changed in a negative way over the the past 2 years. Not a fun environment for staff.
