horrible management, horrible union.
Maintenance Specialist/carman (Former Employee) –  Edgerton, KSJuly 2, 2019
The management is based on the good ol boy philosophy if your not in the group they headhunt and make your life miserable. Carmen are union but there is no job security if the management (non-union) doesn't like you, you are gone. There is no brotherhood or bond between the carmen they will try to get you fired for brownie points and to look good with management. Local will not back you as they are company created so dont expect any help from your reps or the hall. I had no violations or safety incidents showed up early for my shifts and did my job.
Also if you want to have time for family this job is not for you they don't care about your life outside work you will get a no-show even if it's an emergency or unavoidable.
The rules change without notice and if your not in the group you won't know until they write you up. They say they provide boots and work clothes but they only give you $100 to buy boots and winter clothes but you have no choice on boots or winter clothes. you will be written up if you are in violation for having the soles of your boots being "worn out" but they only write up people not in their group. Some of the boots they require you to buy are out of tolerance the moment you get them so expect to resole as soon as you get them. DON'T EXPECT BREAKS OR A FULL LUNCH BREAK.
Pros
Health insurance, pay is alright, it's lowest of union carman.

Maintenance Specialist (Former Employee) –  Norfolk, VAJune 20, 2019
I enjoyed my employment at TTX Company. I had planed on stay on until retirement ; However, I have just been laid off . That's the only reason for the low score on Job Security/Advancement. With that being said , I would gladly work for TTX again if given the opportunity.
Thanks

Things can be better in some ways
Feild Maintenance Specialist (Current Employee) –  Saint Paul, MNJune 2, 2019
While the railroad retirement , 401k plan and health insurance are very good, the unequal pay and tier lists aren't great. 1st tier top pay is about $29-30 an hour, 2nd tier (me at the moment) tops out at about $24-25 an hour. The work environment can vary from location to location. Protected by different labor unions which can help with job security.
Pros
RR retirement, 401k, Health insurance, discounts on almost everything, backed by labor unions
Cons
Different pay scales, separate tiers for the same exact work

Railroad life with good coworkers but poor managment staff
Journeyman Carman/Maintenance Specialist (Former Employee) –  North Baltimore, OHMay 26, 2019
The atmosphere is pretty laid back. Great group of coworkers that act as a family unit. Supervision is a bit inexperienced and needs a bit of refinement in the areas of etiquette and tact.
Pros
Close knit group. Good pay and benefits.

Dishonest culture
Employee (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILMay 24, 2019
Dishonest culture has developed that has led to hiring like minded employees. Leadership team has no mission. The company operates with the approval of the US government. It's time to review this arrangement and change it.

Decent place to work.
Maintenance Specialist (Current Employee) –  Jacksonville, FLJanuary 26, 2019
Decent enough place to work. Job is pretty easy once you're trained. Benefits are good. Management is alright depends on which location you're at. Only thing that needs to change his pay, it's quite low starting out. But if you can manage on what they pay you to begin with eventually it will be decent.

Great People, Work is unique and interesting
Manager (Current Employee) –  Chicago, ILSeptember 11, 2018
Many people retire from the company after decades of service. The benefits are great and the work is usually dynamic. The demographics have recently skewed to a majority of employees with less than 5 years of service. It's the railroad and not cutting edge in terms of culture so many people early in their careers tend to leave after they gain a few years of experience.

Flexibility

Limited Growth Opportunities
