In a VA store- with no O.D.- working alone is the rule rather than the exception. The Entire district runs on a skeleton staff. Even during the peak busy season- you work solo. Also, should you get sick, have a medical emergency, or need surgery..... even WITH appropriate doctor/provider documentation stating the medical necessity for surgical intervention or bed rest - provided you are ineligible for FMLA job protection (e.g. working under 12mo for this company).... USV will refer to their ‘Absentee’ policy- reserving their right to terminate you. Doctor’s notes and the unequivocal acute need for surgery are irrelevant to this company policy. Naturally, once terminated, your health insurance is cancelled as well.

Demoralizing, underappreciated, expected to do what you’re told- not what they do, absurdly high expectations with basement level resources. Opticals run on a skeleton staff, you work alone- even during peak season. Frequent changes in management- all of whom are less than adequate. It’s 2018; a pay freeze/NO raise (for sure all store level employees- above store level I do not know) has been in effect 5.5yrs now. ZERO employee appreciation. High cost healthcare where the company farmed out the Rx benefits to a discount broker. You pay top dollar for your subpar health benefits and then pay for your medications too. A few years back the company had rapid growth and many unqualified/poor leadership/small minded unprofessional people were put into district manager (and above) levels of management. Most have stayed in these positions as they’d truly never qualify in terms of their personal skill set, critical thinking, or leadership skills- for an optical manager position.... much less a DM role- at any other company than this one! USV (aka Refract Optical Group). Oh, and 10%-30% of lab work (per box) arrives incorrect. The lab doesn’t final check before the jobs ship.
Save yourself time.... don’t consider this company a viable choice.

Mainly the questions were concerning customer service and plans on how to build the clientele and sales. The focus was on increasing sales.

Hired as a Licensed Optician in VA, 10/2017, and I never had a background check or drug test. Possibly, it varies depending on the state.... or the person hiring. In the few months I’ve worked here- I’ve seen little consistency. The rules & expectations vary widely based upon the district manager’s preferences. I’ve seen THREE DM’s in the 6-7mo I’ve been with USV. Each one wanted the optical run completely different from the other two.

As of 2018......Their ‘BJ’s’ brand optical employees have NOT seen a raise in 5.5yrs! Last I heard- this was company wide. I seriously doubt any of their US brands have had a raise in 5.5yrs. I say that because the excuse for not getting a raise centers around the USV lab having been ‘upgraded’ a few years back. This lab is used by all USV brands.

Took me 2 months, assuming that they try their hardest to find the best candidates before continuing the hiring process with the typical college teens.
