Great for job security. That's it.
Program Analyst (GS (Current Employee) –  Washington, DCNovember 13, 2018
Working for the government (or for the people) has its perks, which is mainly job security and benefits. Your ability to receive a promotion depends solely on Congress' ability to pass a budget and appropriate funds to the DOL. Oh, and you need to have an administration in place that wants to spend money on it's workforce. Unions within the DOL prevent terrible employees from being fired. There are no skills that are learned that could prep you for bigger, better careers outside of the DOL.
Pros
Job security, benefits
Cons
No promotional opportunity, pay doesn't match local cost of living requirements, office politics, unions run the show

Claims Examiner (Former Employee) –  Jacksonville, FLOctober 9, 2018
A typical work day at the U.S. Department of Labor was always very fast paced and busy. Changes were constantly being made with the LOP and procedure manuals. The hardest part of the job was constantly being changed under different individuals with different standards. However, I truly enjoyed assisting the claimants with their claims.
Pros
I enjoyed assisting the claimants approving medical benefits
Cons
Not being able to assist all claimants before some of them pass away.

The same whose butt are you willing to kiss versus what you know is what counts. It felt more like high school than working with adults. Like the cliques that no one would let you be a part of.
