Decent place for software develoment and technical roles
Field Services Engineer (Current Employee) –  Austin, TXSeptember 24, 2017
I do field support for their products. It is a high travel job based on availability of support contracts. It is great if you like constant travel including posts overseas for up to 6 months at a time.
Pros
Free Sodas
Cons
Very little free time at home

Great place to work with many wonderful perks.
Inventory Control Clerk (Former Employee) –  Austin, TXAugust 5, 2017
I enjoyed my 15 years at Ultra Electronics. I worked with many wonderful people and I was also able to grow into my position. The work comes and goes, but you are not watched over and hounded.
Pros
Free Sodas, Half-day Fridays, Great work atmosphere
Cons
Work comes and goes in spurts

Great Company to work for
Test Engineer III (Former Employee) –  Austin, TXMarch 21, 2017
Spent 10 years on the ATS team. Unfortunately the lack of government defense spending has really hurt the company's longevity.

The pool of engineering talent at ATS was a boon to the company and hopefully things will turn around to a more positive outlook.

Once past the high Ops tempo and low job security, its OK.
FSE (Current Employee) –  Austin, TXDecember 10, 2016
High Ops tempo (spent over 70% of the year on the road). Due defense budget cuts, job security is very volatile. Other than that, it is a good company to work for.
Pros
Free drinks (soda, juice, etc.), fruit, and other items.
Cons
High Ops tempo and low job security

Good Place to work, no future
Director of IT Operations (Former Employee) –  Austin, TexasFebruary 27, 2015
They went from a best place to work to not winning anymore. This could change with a little work but the hardest thing to overcome is the location the office was moved to.
Management is somewhat shackled by head office and cannot truly reinvest in the growth.
When things are good, things are great!
Pros
free coffee and drinks
Cons
horrible location

Big problems
Employee (Current Employee) –  Austin, TexasJuly 29, 2014
Ultra-ATS has some big problems. They've already laid off more than half of the company and haven't hired anyone new in well over a year! That's a big problem when you're a tech company in Austin. They had some really cool technology but that ship has sailed. They are a one trick pony who's time has come and are being put out to pasture. All hat, no cattle. Is that clear enough for you?
Pros
Coffee, cola, juice, tea, water and popcorn. And bonuses if you're in management.
Cons
No bonuses (unless you're in management). East Austin office, tough commute.

A company providing communication products for US and allied armed forces
Senior Systems Integration Engineer (Current Employee) –  Austin, TXSeptember 17, 2013
A day of work is typically working with different business groups across the company (engineering, management, support) to provide the most robust set of capabilities to our armed forces. My peers and co-workers are typically either from a software/hardware engineering discipline or prior military who operate as our support staff. Typically the hardest part of the job is inefficiencies in leadership, processes, and government acquisition but the most enjoyable is seeing your product out in real-world environments supporting our troops to help them do their mission to the best of their abilities

Smaller Defense Company with perks
Subcontracts Manager/ Contracts Manager (Former Employee) –  Austin, TXAugust 6, 2013
Working for a smaller defense/ software development company was exciting however had the drawback of uncertainty when it came to job security. The reason for this would be that the company is extremely product specific and without guaranteed high dollar contracts or work it is unable to prevent layoffs and sustain a permanent workforce.

Good technology and people, but bad management
Business Development Manager (Former Employee) –  San Diego, CANovember 30, 2012
Interesting technology and dedicated, talented engineers and program managers. However, the management is aloof, inconsistent, and top-heavy (seven or more VPs in a company of less than 200 people). The management is also factionalized and secretive, carrying out hire-and-fire policies particularly in the business development department. The company also has a very long sales cycle and a limited government market niche which is shrinking rather than growing, so this has no doubt contributed to the drama that keeps people on edge.
Pros
nice head office spaces, interesting technology, free snacks and sodas.
Cons
long hours, environment of fear, secretive management.
