Best place to work as an adjunct

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
UMBC is one of the few places that pays an adjunct well and is also hands off with your teaching. You're in charge of the curriculum and lessons. Only negative would be the student evaluations as it's usually only a few students that respond which can skew the results.

Decent TA Experience

Had an okay experience as a Computer Science TA at UMBC. We were expected to host a discussion, attend online office hours, and grade assignments weekly. Pretty standard.

Low pressure, easy to learn

Loved working here! I got as many hours as I wanted and it always fit my schedule perfectly. Boss was great and so were my coworkers. Plenty of time to do homework and study.

Best job, wonderful experience

Worked at commonvision, their print and design shop. Supportive team, fun and colorful little shop, lots to learn and great work to do (on the animation side). Really helped my future career prospects and recommend it to any art major or art enthusiast at UMBC.

ok

i think they have nice management, rules and qualifications are reasonable. i strongly suggest some type of bonus pay for graveyard shifts as people often do not show up

Truly enjoyed :)

I came on as a Upward Bound employee. I loved every aspect of my tenure with UMBC. I loved they paid us in a timely manner, management was flexible with our needs in terms of time off or caring for our children. Staff was always valued and appreciated. At times there was some issues with our director in terms of how he spoke to people however that did not take away from the tight ship he ran producing results among the students and staff. I truly miss working for them! I wish I couldve come on full time!

Pros

Staff acknowledgement, fun, autonomy to create your own lesson plans

Cons

none :)

great working environment but low payment for grad students

Great working environment with super supportive faculty. The campus is rather small so people are being very nice to each other and have a deeper bondings with each other. The payment for a phd student is too low to afford a living place, unless you share the place with roommates.

being an office assistant as a student is stress-free.

You can work on schoolwork whenever there isn’t anything going on, but you do have to be experienced to finish the tasks assigned to you. Manager was understanding and kind, and coworkers were pleasant.

APPLY! You won’t regret it. The management and supervisors are super helpful. The communication is beyond super. I would give more stars if I could. Yeah!

Good chance to learn diverse skills

Worked for a department different than my major. There was plenty of flexibility and opportunity to change schedules and work remote when possible or when needed. Originally it was hard to find where the opportunities are, but once I did, the work culture I found was welcoming and constructive.

Productive and fun workplace

Everyone is extremely helpful and kind. The training was adequate and the environment is always open and accepting if you need help you can just ask for it.

Flexibility was great, but little pay

Student workers are paid minimum wage with no raises, however, the flexibility, relaxed job culture, and kind management helped make it a great experience.

Easy

Fun flexible role with many opportunity available for all students. I worked here in the work study program. There are plenty of internship available for students who want to build experience.

Good

Well organized, caring. Good instructors and great material, good quality facility. Easy to access to the lab and computer lab. There are plenty of rooms for group study.

Good place to work.

UMBC is a warm and welcoming community full of people who want to see the school succeed. Like many higher ed institutions, it lags behind on tech adoption. Additionally, many groups are resource constrained. That said, benefits are top tier.

Clear goals and purpose

Community is the best part about the job, there are so many different high-level areas of study and people to interact with. Benefits are generally very good, including good health benefits and being able to pursue higher-level degrees.

It was good at first

I began working at UMBC a few years ago. At the time, it felt like a great place to work, there was effort going into improving quality of the environment and the systems. Now, it feels like the organization is digressing to previous behaviors. Business processes will change without warning and instead of seeing a process through to completion, the process will be rejected with emphasis on correcting the process. Management in centralized departments do not return emails. The campus recently decided to purchase a new data warehouse, which sounds exciting and future thinking, but they already had a data warehouse and a reporting system that simply needed to be tweaked to meet needs. Instead the campus decided to toss that system aside (a few years before purchasing a brand new PS replacement) and launch a new system which is a year into the making and not fixing the old reporting. I am truly disappointed in the direction UMBC is heading. I thought that I had found my forever job. The job that would be great through the remainder of my career and the place I would retire from.

Pros

Campus is beautiful and some really great people work there

Cons

Not enough positive change

A really pleasant place to work

I work with a caring, supportive and flexible team in support of a group of impressive students. My coworkers in other departments throughout the campus have been friendly, helpful and supportive.

Great place but hard to change positions

Competitive environment but nice to be surrounded by a community of others who are always seeking to learn, improve, and advance as individuals and as a community.
