long hrs. working in cold wet environment
Seafood Processor (Former Employee) –  Dutch Harbor, AKNovember 30, 2018
The typical day at work was long and hard there were with cold and wet conditions. It was really back breaking work and very hard on your feet for standing for such long hrs. The hardest part of the job was the continuous heavy lifting. Management was ok I have no complaints. The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting so many new people from all over the world.
Pros
room & board, 3 meals a day, plus snacks, & the laundry was taken care of by them.
Cons
not enough time to get a really appropriate amount of sleep, & having four people to a room. Not much privacy at all. The cell phone service was awful, also the internet was extremely slow.

get free breakfast, put on safety gear and do safety meeting and stretches. Work your 4 first hours. Get your free lunch meal. Do another 4 hours and complete your 10 or 12 hour shift. Get your two 15 min. breaks every two hours. Enjoy Another free meal for dinner. Go to your dorm, shower and sleep 8 to 9 hours. Do the same up to 2 weeks to a month. I learned to appreciate life. Managment was cool always there to guide you in the right direction. Awesome people to work with. The hardest part of the job was weather. But it was also nice seing snow everywhere. sightseing after the seasson is over.
Pros
Fee housing and meals.
Cons
Unless you take your familly with you you wont see them up to 3 months to a year.

Sea food processor (Former Employee) –  Redmond, WA 98052January 22, 2017
Wake up early to go get brekfeast. Walk across to Production area put on ppe's. I was working 5 - 4 days depending on how much fish we had. 12 hr. shifts. when there was no fish clean -up half day. 30 min lunch so it was better to either bring snacks and eat up stairs than wasting time to walk to mess hall. People were cool JUst like anywhere there's always a jerk in the crowd. THe hardest part was the cold. The best part was being able to put in hrs.
Pros
not over whelming work..
Cons
its just always cold..

Overall an excellent company with great benefits
Operations Analyst (Former Employee) –  Redmond, WANovember 20, 2015
Major participant in the largest fishery in North America - the volume of manufacturing is absolutely seductive. The accelerated learning environment gave me twice the level of experience to match the actual duration of employment. Loved working with the majority of the executive staff and especially my team.

You can move up if you demonstrate a skill set that is difficult to replace, but management is reluctant to be proactive in rewarding individuals that are contributing significant value, so you have to make a case for yourself. Sadly, many employees can be categorized as relatively complacent and originating from a background that is not of their current position; the were just willing to stick around long enough.
Pros
Stable job security and industry, medical benefits are excellent
Cons
Poorly defined career path, poor performers can stick around as long as they don't violate policy

UniSea is a great place to stay while you work. Just about everything is taken care of!
Processor/Grader (Former Employee) –  Dutch Harbor, AKJuly 25, 2014
Typical day is getting up getting ready for work by stopping at the Galley for breakfast or supper, depending on your work schedule.
Afterwards, going to work, putting on raingear, and heading out to your assigned area. This is where you learn how much you can take, learn, and how well your body is either in or out of shape. You get to meet people from all over the world because they live in the same dormitories as you. The hardest part is being away from home and family, but after 3 weeks, you get used to it and your body and mind do very well after those 3 weeks. The best part is making new friends and at the end, you want to go back for that hard and strenuous work. Dutch Harbor is beautiful!
Pros
Free buffet like meals, that are great! No laundry, it's done for you! Small payment for room and board.
Cons
Sad when you have to say good-bye to new friends.
