Student Ambassador (Former Employee) –  Hilo, HIApril 23, 2019
Beware of this University. Racism runs this town and university. Professors are hired whom do not have a degree in the area they are teaching. Will come out dumber than coming in. Go to Manoa. D ok not waste your time with Hilo.

Learning Opportunities at Every Corner
Office Assistant (Former Employee) –  Honolulu, HIApril 21, 2019
Worked at the Center for Pacific Islands Studies through the federal work study program. The office was always busy, but the people who worked in the center were never too busy to answer my questions or teach me things. It was a great gig for a college freshman.

Graduate Research Assistant - LGBT Health (Current Employee) –  Honolulu, HIApril 12, 2019
The administrative side of University of Hawaii is notoriously slow, but the project team I was a part of was very motivating and I had exposure to many great opportunities to learn.

Hawaii NASA Space Grant Fellow (Former Employee) –  Honolulu, HIMarch 28, 2019
The facilities and faculty at the University of Hawaii of Manoa are phenomenal on all fronts. Professors were always willing to take time to teach students, and give them access to resources that would benefit their education.

Managable for students
Teaching Assistant (Current Employee) –  Honolulu, HIMarch 25, 2019
comfortable work environment, but underpaid as TA's because the likelihood of you actually assisting anyone is very low- most TA's instruct entire labs similar to an actual professor and are not paid well enough to comfortably live in Hawaii. Flexible; not too time consuming for working students.
Pros
Friendly and flexible environment
Cons
lack of organization, low pay

Student Assistant (Former Employee) –  Hilo, HIMarch 24, 2019
The position that I previously had with UH Hilo was a temporary student position. I absolutely loved my job because I was able to help other students who needed help. I understood the difficulties that come with being a new student and not knowing where to begin.

Usually flexible and willing to work around student schedule. This is advantageous for students that are currently using student housing. Great stepping stone.

Typical collegiate strength coaching job
ASSISTANT STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH (Former Employee) –  University of Hawaii at ManoaFebruary 26, 2019
Great environment working with elite athletes. As is typical with college coaching, be prepared to work long hours, and at times 7 days per week. This is the normal division 1 college coaching experience. If you do like working long hours and do not like the "grind" this profession is not for you. Be prepared for an average strength coach's salary in the state with the most expensive cost of living in the country. Relative to the cost of living, the pay here is fairly low.
Pros
Long hours and low pay
Cons
Coaching elite college athletes, great coaching environment

Student Enrollment Specialist (Former Employee) –  Kapolei, HIFebruary 3, 2019
As a former student, it was fun working and getting to know other students. I just wished the management was better and more understanding. There weren't much negotiation with our shifts which made it harder to find time to study for school.
Pros
Holidays off, making new friends

management, barely negotiable hours

Building Manager at UH HILO at Student Life Center
Building manager (Former Employee) –  Hilo, HIJanuary 30, 2019
A typical day at work, would consist of looking at the Student's or Faculty/Staff ID (front and back) to see if it's validated. Student's ID are different from the Faculty/Staff ID, but both IDs need to be validated.
For the Student's ID- located behind their Student ID should present the semester & year, along with their home campus both on the back of their Student ID.
Being a Building Manager, you need to know and understand the rules of the Student Life Center (SLC), along with knowing how to talk to other students if they are in the wrong. It would be best to take deep breaths, and to recollect the thoughts before opening your mouth. Another thing, being a Building Manager, you need to know when to stand your ground (with students, student-athletes, or faculty/staff members) by being firm with the decisions you make as the building manager (with the help and support from front desk) toward the individual's actions of not bringing their Student or Faculty/Staff ID (ID is the only way to get into the SLC) into the SLC.
Managing of the SLC is great and suitable for all students and Faculty/Staff.
The workplace of the SLC is culturally diverse and we treat everyone with respect.
The hardest part of this job, is waiting till the last hour of work to be done.
The enjoyable part of this job, you get to meet new people while working at the SLC, and you also make friends with the other students who do come to the gym.
