A leading provider of financial protection benefits in the United States and the United Kingdom, Unum helps millions of people gain affordable access to disability, life, accident, critical illness, cancer, dental, and vision benefits through the workplace — benefits that help them protect their families, their finances, and their futures. Its primary businesses are Unum US, Colonial Life, and Unum UK, as well as a closed block of products that are still serviced, but not actively marketed. Additionally, Unum has numerous subsidiaries.
Unum runs six primary operating centers in the US (Chattanooga, Tennessee; Portland, Maine; Columbia, South Carolina; Worcester, Massachusetts; Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Glendale, California) as well as dozens of sales offices scattered across the US market. It also has operations in the UK and Poland.
Sales & Marketing
Unum's products are sold and marketed through field sales agents and independent brokers.
In 2017, the company reported record total revenue of $11.3 billion and claims paid of $7 billion. Additionally, nearly $600 million in capital was returned to shareholders.
Unum’s performance is rooted in sound underlying fundamentals and a solid balance sheet that have positioned the company to execute on its plans and on its capital management strategy. That capital strategy has increasingly featured strategic acquisitions, as well as traditional methods of returning capital to its shareholders through buying back its stock and steadily increasing its dividends.
In 2017, Unum and its employees contributed more than $12.8 million to charitable organizations. In the same year, employees volunteered more than 77,000 hours. – less
