Software Engineer in Remote
on June 24, 2022

I've been working at Upwork(towards improving upwork platform) for more than a year now. It is intensive work, usually not going over the 9-5 (which you can actually accommodate according to preference). I've learnt that technology wise it is out of date but has great engineers and good funding to improve. Engineering management is great. Company management is radical left, no freedom to think outside the politically correct line of thought defined by the company/CEO. Also, you are literally forced to stay in slack channels in which they(the small group of people that has permission to speak up) blatantly talk about what politic they're going to vote. Disgusting, really. Nobody can even mention anything like this, we are literally forbidden to do so by the CEO->"At upwork [controversial topics are] not up for debate". The workplace culture is a bit toward the professional side for a software company, which usually is a bit more relaxed, your millage may vary, of course. The hardest part of the job specially at the beginning is getting to know all the different components and teams, which becomes second nature after 90 days or so. The most enjoyable part of the job is that according to seniority you have the freedom to suggest and implement technical changes that improve the stack.

I've been on Upwork for a few years now, and it's always been a pleasure to work with clients who are just as excited about the process as I am. I love that Upwork provides a platform for people like us to connect and collaborate across time zones, so it's always exciting to see what my clients will come up with next!

Overall, Upwork is an ok place to work. My coworkers are friendly and supportive and remote work is definitely a plus. There has been a revolving door of managers so it has been a little tough adapting to different management styles. From a product perspective, it takes a long time for buy in and implementation so it can be a little demoralizing when we keep spinning our wheels. The most disappointing part though are the lack of benefits. Upwork has their own classification of full time employees called "TIP" which basically gives the bare minimum of benefits that are required by California law (partial healthcare coverage, sick days but no PTO) . Though we work 40 hours+ every week, we don't get the same perks and benefits as "official" full-time employees, (mainly directors and higher ups) meaning there are no stock options, bonuses PTO, medical, office reimbursements, and daycare even though we are all on w-2. Some of us have been here for 5+ years with no signs of ever having the chance of transitioning to what they call a full time employee. This has been my biggest gripe and has been brought up on multiple hand meetings but it is always brushed off and that they're "looking to improve." Ultimately though, it just sounds like they're trying to save money. In the end, it will hurt the company because this policy does not help attract top talent when other companies at the same scale offer much more.
