Worked as a freelancer
Content Expert (Current Employee) –  FreelancerMarch 7, 2019
Lot of low-level clients. Too many freelancers that you compete with but if you have the skills and good presentation, you can go a long way and earn good. Sky is the limit.

Problem areas - the site is not freelancer-friendly. Accounts get banned for very small reasons. Favors the client too much who often force freelancer to work outside the platform, blackmail for the ratings, refuse to accept work citing the quality issue.. sad thing is that all the disputes almost always go in favor of the client. If a client flags you even once, Upwork might ban you. It is so darn strict there so basically, you always work under a cloud of threat. That's the poorest work culture you are a part of.
Cons
No security in terms of your profile. Clients often take you for a ride.

Upwork
Freelance Designer (Current Employee) –  San Jose, CAFebruary 21, 2019
Upwork is an easy way to work from home. Getting a job is sometimes hard due to competition over the internet. The UI is easy to work with and the clients are easy to contact through the app or website.
Pros
Work from home

Competitive

Nice offices!
Current Employee (Current Employee) –  Mountain View, CAFebruary 13, 2019
Learned a lot! Workplace culture is "cliquey" and lots of politics. Management seems disorganized and out of touch with how to fix unfair treatment of others. No micro-managing, which is good.

Transcriptionist, Editor (Current Employee) –  IllinoisJanuary 31, 2019
Rediculously competitive and of course the more money you make, the more money upwork takes, clients sometimes want to attempt to scan you and the company doesnt really care unless you buy one of their employment packages,
Pros
You work the hours you want, youre the boss
Cons
hard to get jobs, competeing with other people, might get scammed

English Language Transcriptionist (Current Employee) –  California City, CAJanuary 22, 2019
You can work whenever you want and wherever you want, choose Moldavia or Hawaii. You can go on vacation or sick leave whenever you feel like to. I recommend it. The workplace culture is very large, you will work with so many cultures, races, etc.
Pros
You choose when to have time off.
Cons
No steady income.

Freelance job..
Freelance Worker (Current Employee) –  Home BasedDecember 12, 2018
It's a site that connects freelancer to those who need work done. The pay is minimum and there are no benefits. While it allowed me to work from home, which I need due to a seizure disorder, I am needing a more reliable income.
The part that I liked best was that you got to work on different projects and learn new things.
I didn't always enjoy having to hunt for a job or being approached by people who wanted to hire me for work which I was not comfortable doing.
Pros
work from home
Cons
low pay, competitive

Low wages
Contractor (Current Employee) –  Minneapolis, MNNovember 23, 2018
The pay at Upwork is very poor and often times competition for a project can be cut-throat. I don't recommend it unless you are a large firm and have the capacity to work on many projects at once as its difficult to earn a fair amount of pay otherwise.
Pros
freedom
Cons
low wages

Working through Upwork its ok. You choose your own pay rate but Upwork has a 20% fee which makes what you earn a bit on the lower side. It has its perks, you can get hired on the spot and start working the next day.
Pros
Work from home, decent pay
Cons
20% fee, lack of stable jobs, too competitive

Demotivating work environment
Program Manager (Former Employee) –  Mountain View, CAAugust 15, 2018
Upwork's culture is different depending on which location you work out of. They lack good management and only focus on growing employees that are excelling in large teams. There are employees on smaller teams that are understaffed for the workload and often overlooked. There is little to no work life balance for some team members. Upwork's Executive HR team is unapproachable starting from the very top with their SVP. HR's subset of teams rarely work together toward one common goal or as one large team. Upwork can be a good place to work again depending on the location, team you work with and if you get a good manager.
Don't get me wrong there are some great people to work with at Upwork.

Competitive & low pay
FREELANCE WRITING, INDEPENDANT CONTRACTOR (Current Employee) –  Baltimore, MDAugust 13, 2018
The best thing UpWork offers is flexibility. While some employers do offer full time and long-term job opportunities, the market is extremely competitive and depending on skills sets and time on UpWork, it is hard to find more long-term jobs. Also, unfortunately, because of the competitive nature, the pay can be extremely low. There are no benefits or paid time off options.

However, the system is very easy to use both in applying for and submitting work, and UpWork's escrow model protects contractors from being taken advantage of.

I would mostly recommend UpWork for those looking for part-time work with flexible hours.

Freelance Creator (Current Employee) –  internetMay 24, 2018
Lots of opportunities to work in a large variety of creative areas. Very competitive but also potentially very lucrative. Everything hinges on the contractor hiring you to get the gig. All work and schedule is relative to the particular job.
Pros
wide range of jobs and pay
Cons
have to get hired instead of choosing assignment

UpWork was a great way to pass the time
Remote Freelancer (Former Employee) –  RemoteMay 1, 2018
There is not a feasible way to make Upwork a full-time career, but it is a great way to pass the time as something to do after work. The job bidding environment is competitive due to foreigners bidding low on projects, taking jobs from a normal worker.

You Are 100% Responsible for Your Own Income
FREE LANCE SEO WRITER (Current Employee) –  HomeMarch 23, 2018
Upwork.com is a website clearing house for freelance workers. It is entirely up to you to seek out contracts, negotiate terms, then deliver as promised work. The website assists with this in a number of ways including providing escrow accounts to insure the worker receives payment and the contracting employer receives work promised in timely fashion. This adds a level of security that is quite nice and comforting. You may pick the pace of your work but be prepared for the fact that many of the jobs are not that high paying. One must prove themselves through taking the lower paying jobs. The longer one is there, the more high reviews they receive, the more of the better paying contracts they will be able to land.
Pros
Very flexible work schedule
Cons
Competitive with no set income level to budget on.

Its Ok but not great
Freelance (Current Employee) –  United StatesFebruary 28, 2018
Pros:

Work Life Balance
Can typically work at any time of day
I have met some great clients
I feel like my skill set is useful
The Platform and software work great for time tracking, billing and getting paid especially on especially fixed price work which is escrowed.

Cons:
Very competitive in my space.
Feel like I have to be very quick to apply for a job that matches
A lot of clients are unresponsive to all once they post jobs
Clients expect expert level work for lower than market pay
20% fee on hourly is high
