Find a way to evaluate the performance of supervisors, especially in the administrative senior level jobs. Not just do the do their job but how do they treat their people. There are many people who have worked at the university for years and years and get burnt out or just stop trying, or are just riding out the present to retirement. It creates such a stagnant environment. Plus, when those people stay in the director jobs usually enemies are made and their dept suffers for the whole time they are in power. I know the department heads know how political it is there-almost like organized crime- department vs. department, VP vs VP. In my experience at other state institutions HR is representative of the univ. but there for the employees- proactively helping them- not showing up or meeting with employees for complaints or disciplinary actions and defending actions of the institution ( to the death) instead of creating a mediation and actually working things out. Other institutions also provided GREAT training on all kinds of topics software, communication skills, leadership, professionalism, and much much more. Any institution can be and do the minimum, great benefits, time off etc, but having great management, ending the organized crime type politics, and truly investing the the knowledge, skills and self worth really could create people not only good for the university but the San Antonio community.

Do not hire someone merely because they have a degree. Take into consideration the older candidate who has experience, integrity & ethics. Bottom line is you get what you pay for.
