Can make alot of money, bad management
Utility Locate Technician (Former Employee) –  Toledo, OHMay 9, 2019
this is a okay company to work for, if you do your job you can advance a lot. you get your own truck to take home, trucks have drive cam in them which can be a pain sometimes. Has okay benefits and starting pay is okay also. During the summer they always want you to work 10 hours a day and work weekends to stay caught up, not very much work/life balance I thought personally. Sometimes the job got repetitive. Also at times can be stressful because of jobs going late. If they don't like you they'll find a way to get rid of you I witnessed this multiple times. All and all if you're looking for a job where you can get lots of overtime make a lot of money this isn't a bad place to be, I got bored with it so I left and found something different.
Pros
Work truck, by yourself
Cons
long hours, on call sometimes

very stressful, not very reasonable company
Utility Locator (Former Employee) –  Hayward, CAMarch 21, 2019
you are not set up well to do your job and have to do most of your learning on your own. half of what you are told in training class is not true. you will not be rewarded properly for hard and diligent work but will be put down for even the smallest mistake that might not even affect anybody. lowest paying utility locating company and they do not treat their workers fairly. a lot of hard working good employees within this company, that are taken advantage of every day for their willingness to do the best job they can. this is why this company has a high turnover rate. would recommend to someone who is very young and in need of making decent money for someone in their low 20s, but not for someone who is trying to get into a company they can make a true and solid career out of.
Pros
work truck to take home
Cons
overworked, unfair compensation, unfair treatment, not a long term place of work if you ever want to make over $30/hour

Comcast line locator (Former Employee) –  Honey Brook, PAJuly 5, 2018
The company is a great company. My boss was a very understanding person. If you don't mind driving all day and being in a small pick up truck this job is great. The only times it sucked was when its was either really hot/cold or rainy/snowy. Also with being in a truck all day there was no easily accessible bathroom.

Utility Locator/ damage screener (Former Employee) –  Colton, CAMarch 25, 2018
I was asked to do many things that were against company and OSHA guidelines. In my experience, safety was never a priority with UTILIQUEST. This job does offer you the ability to work independently

Management is terrible, very petty and bad communication.
Utility Line Locator (Former Employee) –  Strongsville, OHMarch 22, 2018
I worked here for a little over 3 months. They train you for about 3 weeks, you locate gas lines which can be very stressful and dangerous. They are not very helpful and expect a lot or of you. They do not do well with praise, but are quick to discipline. They're expectations are very high, much higher than other companies with more contacts who locate more than one utility. My supervisor lied to me on more than one occasion and sometimes treated me with little respect and a condescending attitude.
Pros
Great benefits
Cons
Stressful, heavy lifting, junky equipment, bad management.

Drive cams are awful everything changes during winter time and you are watched like a hawk for every task but in summer time and the busy season you have free range and can work as many hours as you want but that doesn’t leave time for you to have a life on call is garbage you wind up working 3 nights a week non stop and constantly feel pressured to do more

When you first start they allways say take your time .don't rush so you won't get a damage. Then when you get almost a year in there rushing .
Gas line locator and water and electric (Current Employee) –  Beltsville, MDNovember 19, 2017
They don't say anything about production in the beginning. When you start. And be taking your time like they told you . They start saying your production is slow you need to move faster. Then thats when the damage come from trying to speed up.They want you to do 20 or 30 tickets in a day.

Work as much as you like. there will be mental stress at times when dealing with difficult locates but other than that this is an awesome place to work take home truck as long as your performance is good you'll be getting a raise just like they say and they give bonuses for going damage free for a year. Great personal freedom in this place work at your own pace and work as much overtime as ya like.

What I learn with Utiliquest you have to sacrifice quantity than quality.
Utility Locator Technician (Former Employee) –  Beltsville, MDAugust 20, 2017
If you want to take your time to do your job better you are wrong because you are not going to make a good production. To get a good production finish all your ticket in a record time. They evaluate your production according how much you did and not how good your work is. If your production is lower than other workers you send you home when they don't have a lot of tickets. Sacrifice quality than quantity.

Not a career, at least not in or around the Valdosta area
Utility Locate Technician (Former Employee) –  Valdosta, GAAugust 2, 2017
I trained in Savannah GA and the company provided a stipend of $35/daily and a hotel room for the 4 week training that was required. The training is the only good part of the job really, the rest was not.

Pros: Company vehicle, tools

Cons:
-Vehicle has DriveCam. Records on a 10 second loop and if a wreck or accident happens it will take the 10 seconds before and record 10 seconds after the incident and upload to a server at night to be reviewed by a 3rd party and sent to your manager if they find you in the wrong. The DriveCam is sensitive and will go off if you hit a curb, railroad tracks, speed bumps, etc... So always be aware of what you are doing because you may end up in a training video where the class gets to watch you dig for gold.

-Inadequate training. Once you are on your own you will realize that the training you received doesn't cover what is in the field and when you reach out for support you are not given any and sometimes may receive a sarcastic reply or treated as if you are unintelligent.

-Ticket quotas. They will tell you that there are none if you're new, this is false. You have to maintain a 3.5 ticket rate per hour. Which means at least 3 tickets need to be closed per hour and working on the next one or else you will be docked on your performance and have a warning form to complete which basically means you have to pick up your numbers or they will let you go. This is really not great because some tickets will have you working longer than expected, so you will try and do quantity instead of quality. This method fails miserably and is the reason
more... the company is, if it hasn't already, losing its contract with windstream.

Be wary going into this company, do your research and make an informed decision, not just one based off my review but others as well.
