Vertus is Rochester's newest tuition-free high school for young men. Each student belongs to a small learning team of 12-14 students led by a full-time mentor, tutor, and guide called a Preceptor. Students are assessed upon entry and develop individual learning plans that meet them where they are. They move as fast as they can or as slowly as they need to. Students do most of their coursework in computer learning labs that blend on-line lessons with individualized instruction, group projects, and support from expert teachers. Daily seminars teach character, literacy, critical thinking, and presentation skills to prepare students for the workplace and for life. Every student earns the credentials to get a good job in addition to a high school diploma. After graduation, each student chooses the path that is right for him: college, technical school, or starting a career. Preceptors and teachers participate in a formal leadership development program so that they advance as leaders in the school.

They encourage a very family-community oriented environment. As a whole, the people there are very passionate about what they do. They embody the notion that it takes a village to raise a child. There have been many students who have ended up graduating from Vertus who, otherwise, wouldn't have. The job can be very time consuming, both during the work week and on occassional weekends. Teacher salary starts in the low 40's (regardless of years of experience). Messy politics have become more frequent this past year and communication between all employees is an area of weakness. Because it is a school for boys, the majority of staff are men (which is good and bad).

A school with a plan to help young men succeed. Being a year round school that offers many electives, that interest the students, such as music and the barbering school. It helps give them a view of some careeers they may want to pursue in the long run.

The students are a hard bunch, but very lovable. The staff is great but the founders were not at all built for the area work for the school. At times making it a very hard day for staff and students

Excellent school for the young men of Rochester. Typical work day is from 8:15 to 5. Most enjoyable part of the job is helping develop character traits and increasing academic growth of students in need.
