At Vesta Property Management Corporation, nepotism is a flagrant problem that disrupts the satisfaction, and professional growth at the corporate level. Although a recent nepotism study on NCAA teams showed that teams that have nepotism (two or more family members as players or coaching on the same team) perform better and win more games than those without, multifamily affordable housing is a "horse of a different color!" A couple of the variables witnessed were new-hires that lacked affordable housing qualifications and self-awareness, and transparency in the hiring process i.e. you may be chosen for simply being "one of the Chosen." Ultimately, a diverse inclusive work force, with equality, is in the best interests of all and the organization's success!

First and foremost, recognize that there are individuals at Vesta holding others back. Individuals that lack a good work ethic and professionalism, exude negativity, exhibit sub-par production, gossip and engage in office politics-daily! These individuals are a cancer to your team, and your goal of becoming a management company the likes of NMHC's 2017/2018 Top 50!. Do the hard work of removing them-you know who they are.

In addition, actively invest in your talent by providing leadership development offerings i.e. executive coaches, internal mentoring (good mentors share their insights, and cultivate their mentee's professional development with access to other beneficial people and opportunities), developmental assignments, and sponsorship of short term executive education programs.

In final, the people who are doing it best, know what it takes to do a job right. If you want to keep people, then involve them in the decision-making process.
