Excellent work environment
Software Asset Manager (Current Employee) –  2300 West Broad StreetSeptember 19, 2019
DMV is an excellent work environment for a diversity of skill levels for all types of careers as well as advanced opportunities for young high school to rising college students. Typical day is learning, gaining new knowledge and developing and implementing new improved processes. Management is supportive, provides excellent and professional guidance at all times.

A pretty good place to work
Server (Current Employee) –  VirginiaAugust 20, 2019
Workdays are generally Monday-Friday with some Saturdays. This may depend on the position you have. Employees are friendly and helpful. The Commissioner has rally days were he gets together with employees to share department news, recognize the people who work in various departments and share future projects. Very enjoyable work atmosphere, more money would be nice.

I would not recommend this employment
Program Support Technician (Former Employee) –  Richmond, VAAugust 19, 2019
Most of the people are really nice and the upper level management is great!

The problem is the upper management is not aware of how terrible the direct report supervisors can be. And, you better not say anything is a supervisor is horrible because life will really get tough.

I resigned and never looked back!!!

Senior Generalist (Current Employee) –  Bristol DistrictAugust 17, 2019
Many people would love to have the benefits of this job but most wouldn't survive the work load. Managers have more say in promotions than they want you to think. If you are not a favorite then don't expect quick advancement. Management does not hold all employees to the same standard. As a DMV employee you are expected to over work yourself along with deal with customers who don't understand that the employee at the counter is not responsible for the laws and policies made by legislative members.

Senior Special Agent (Current Employee) –  Roanoke, VAJuly 17, 2019
Good benefits, great place to work. Good supervision, no micromanagement. Salary is not the best. The management at times do onsite visits to check on your work status.

The lowest paying agency in the Commonwealth...
Support Technician (Former Employee) –  Richmond, VAJuly 15, 2019
...reflects as such! The culture is biased and should be revamped! Upper management needs management; the Nepotism may be to a fault...there's a sense of entitlement amongst some family members.

Working with the general public in a fast-paced setting
Customer Service Representative (Current Employee) –  Hampton, VAJune 30, 2019
The most difficult part of this job is dealing with sometimes irate customers who fail to realize that the customer service representative is merely there to provide the service while adhering to established procedures and policies. I have maintained the GOLDEN RULE in this setting which has helped in being empathetic to the customers I have encountered.

Everyday is a new day at DMV
Senior Customer Service Generalist (Current Employee) –  Vienna, VAFebruary 26, 2019
Day starts slow and picks up in the afternoon and early evening until we close it keeps you on your toes. Time flies at DMV. I enjoyed working with the staff and learned to work with diverse customers and challenges. The management is always around to help and guide you along any issues. The seniors are there to train and mentor you. There is no hardest part, there are challenges and our goal is to keep the customer happy.
Pros
Fast Paced
Cons
Long wait times for customers

Productive but not beneficial as a P14! Put the work in to HOPE you become full time.
Clerk (Current Employee) –  Richmond, VAFebruary 14, 2019
It’s a good job for students or someone with another source of income since you have no choice but to start off as part time with no benefits and no guarantee to even go full time. Not having benefits, sucks.

Too Stressful and Not Enough Pay
Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) –  Norfolk, VANovember 4, 2018
For all of the work they have you do, the DMV does not compensate very well. You are required to give driving tests to be full time, often times to people who are not ready to drive alone or who cannot speak or understand English well enough. Customers frequently complain about wait times but staff does not have the tools necessary to work faster and more efficiently. Computer systems frequently go down, office furniture is old, you are not allowed to drink enough to keep from losing your voice and are frequently micro-managed.
