Environmental Specialist II (Former Employee) –  Suffolk, VANovember 14, 2018
A great place to work. The workload was sometimes overwhelming. Training opportunities were good. Salary was competitive with respect to the public sector but not the private sector.

I did not enjoy working at VDOT after new management was put into place. Not a conducive environment. Very hostile & vindictive management practices..

Excellent organization to work for. They have tons of training and give employees opportunity to grow. In my position you have a lot of ability to determine the outcome of your negotiations.

Team Operator Two (Current Employee) –  Covington, VAOctober 2, 2018
Vdot is a good job with great benefits. Day to day is different. You do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. Coworkers help one another. Safety is appreciated and awarded.

Fun place to work
Transportation Operator (Former Employee) –  Marion, VASeptember 30, 2018
VDOT overall is a great workplace if you like working outside and doing different things. Shovel asphalt and gravel. Drive dump truck, tractor, grader, backhoe, and much more. Flagging and setting signs. Plow snow in the winter, and cut brush and trees in the summer, paving roads and clean out ditches.

Poor Management and Pay
Traffic Controller/Flagger (Current Employee) –  Hampton, VASeptember 22, 2018
Management doesn't hold anyone accountable and room for advancement is favoritism based. You never know when a raise may come and unless someone retires it is very hard to get on a shift that may work for you when you have a family.

VDOT is a mission focused government agency. It is one of the largest agencies with multiple focuses to support its mission of transportation in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Transportation Operator II (Current Employee) –  Winchester, VAAugust 20, 2018
VDOT is the type of job where it does not matter how hard you work or how much pride you take in the work you`re doing, you get the same evaluation score as someone who is a lazy slob.
Pros
steady hours
Cons
low wages, slim chances for advancement.

Transportation Operations Controller (Former Employee) –  Fairfax, VAJuly 24, 2018
Contract position for the state with poor management and low wages, no opportunity to grow and you will work shifts that are short people always. If you need a job go for it but long term dont bother.

Program Management Specialist, Team Lead (Current Employee) –  Richmond, VAMay 10, 2018
VDOT is a great place to gain experience, but not a great place for advancement. Most people have been there on average of 25 years and will not leave until retirement.

Gret work and a nice place to work and grow into a professional workplace. The management was the best to work for and the training was the first class to develop new people to the company.

VDOT is a great place to work.
Environmental Specialist (Current Employee) –  Staunton, VAApril 18, 2018
VDOT employees are team players with the common goal of designing and building highway projects, and maintaining the states roadways and bridges.

Being part of the team is rewarding. The work environment is relaxed but we all have a lot to do and work together to get it done.
Pros
Employee Recognition and other events
Cons
Possible nights and weekends during emergencies such as flood and snow events

Good and Bad
Part Time Employment (Former Employee) –  Fairfax, VA 22030April 17, 2018
Like any business you have your good and bad employees. Problem is bad, lazy, unethical employees are not removed. And, amazingly, get promoted. Some really intelligent, hardworking managers were pushed out or miserable due to political maneuverings of upper management. Poor communication skills and language barriers made it difficult to work effectively. Some great long term employees with valuable experience and great work ethic. Unlimited training opportunities is a plus.

A good place to work
Custodian (Former Employee) –  Salem, VAApril 9, 2018
It is a good place to work. The environment was average. The employees were pleasant and friendly and very helpful. I learned that without team work ,it is very tough to make a job satisfactory. Both management and employees must work in harmony in order for a business to be productive and stable.

there are many things that were wrong with working here. one of the main issues was that there was no full time positions at all open for where I worked, even though there was a promise for one.
