VDOT is a great place to work.
Environmental Specialist (Current Employee) –  Staunton, VAApril 18, 2018
VDOT employees are team players with the common goal of designing and building highway projects, and maintaining the states roadways and bridges.

Being part of the team is rewarding. The work environment is relaxed but we all have a lot to do and work together to get it done.
Pros
Employee Recognition and other events
Cons
Possible nights and weekends during emergencies such as flood and snow events

Good and Bad
Part Time Employment (Former Employee) –  Fairfax, VA 22030April 17, 2018
Like any business you have your good and bad employees. Problem is bad, lazy, unethical employees are not removed. And, amazingly, get promoted. Some really intelligent, hardworking managers were pushed out or miserable due to political maneuverings of upper management. Poor communication skills and language barriers made it difficult to work effectively. Some great long term employees with valuable experience and great work ethic. Unlimited training opportunities is a plus.

A good place to work
Custodian (Former Employee) –  Salem, VAApril 9, 2018
It is a good place to work. The environment was average. The employees were pleasant and friendly and very helpful. I learned that without team work ,it is very tough to make a job satisfactory. Both management and employees must work in harmony in order for a business to be productive and stable.

there are many things that were wrong with working here. one of the main issues was that there was no full time positions at all open for where I worked, even though there was a promise for one.

Workplace culture should be more professional! Employees need to have opportunities tracked and monitored so that there is growth. This is lacking and truly important!

Transportation Operator SB II (Current Employee) –  Louisa, VAFebruary 13, 2018
Work is enjoyable, people I work with are highly skilled and professional. Direct management are very easy to get along with and work with, very respectful. It is very easy to return that respect. Hardest part of the job is outdoor winter construction and after hours snow removal from roadways. The most rewarding part of the job is seeing the completed bridge or construction work, and knowing that I was a part of the team that completed a difficult task, one step at a time.
Pros
Health Benefits, Holidays, Retirement
Cons
Snow removal, winter construction.

Supervisor/Crew Leader (Former Employee) –  Axton, VAJanuary 31, 2018
favoritism rules the day at VDOT. Incompetence is rampant among management. A backbiting environment, with a lack of leadership and transparency. The good old boy network at its finest.
Pros
job security
Cons
favortism, unfair job assignments, lack of diversity, old antiquated systems.

It was a great place to work
UI-UX Designer (Current Employee) –  Richmond, VAJanuary 24, 2018
The new management is implementing lots of changes in different directions and it could be a bit stressful to work there in this moment.
As a contractor there is NOT JOB SECURITY right now, State Employes are asked to take over all the knowledge and the rumors are they want SE rather than contractors.

Great place to work if you have friends in high places
Equipment Technician (Current Employee) –  Culpeper, VAJanuary 4, 2018
Too many people get jobs based on connections and not qualifications. Culpeper district is by far the worst in the state as far as that goes, way too many people don't deserve their jobs or seem to incompetent to do their job. The pay is terrible unless you're on the top, the guys who "keep Virginia moving" all have to have side businesses tree work, lawn care, auto repair etc. The pay calendar is ridiculous Google it. The retirement through VRS "hybrid plan" has become more like a forced 401k rather than the better defined benefit plan. There is little room for advancement depending on your department and you can forget getting a raise so be prepared the low price they quote you is your price for life, you'll train people who make more than you. There are positive points though there are many paid holidays, lots of time off, employee discounts(could be on more relative things like perhaps discounts with a grocery store of some kind instead of so many entertainment options, but there are discounts on wireless services and health and fitness among other things that are nice). The moral of the story is the state is becoming less competitive with the private sector.
Pros
Health insurance, time off, paid holidays
Cons
Poor pay, corruption, incompetency
