Okay, first of all I am a Licensed and Non Armed Security Officer and been in that job for over a decade. A lot of people call me Guard/ Secutiry Guard. Yes Security officer is more professional than just a guard. I correct people sometimes because my license says Security Officer and I went to school for it. But I’ve met Guards that work without a license. Just like Bodyguards! They get paid after the events or daily! They don’t do background checks nor drug tests!
So, I think that should make the difference but people don’t care much.

I work now in Florida and a security Guard here is only allowed to carry a flashlight and a note pad with a pen,Where as a Armed Security Officer has had more training and has passed the background check by the F.B.I. and has also passed the psycholigy exam and the required physicaland has had several hours of firearms training before he/she can carry a firearm which must be fully loaded at all this while on duty and is allowed to have it on their duty belt to work and also is allowed to keep it on them until they get back at their residence. If a person completes all of the requirements then they will be issued their Armed Licenses in Florida.

In layman's terms, a typical security guard is unarmed and a security officer is armed. Both have similar job requisites. A security officer has more expertise in the levels of use of deadly force spectrum and go through more rigorous training than your typical security guard. Due to being armed, there are more risks with being a security officer than with a security guard, which can also be a deterrent for some companies/individual(s).

A security guard is not licensed to carry a firearm and has no business as to just when or how he /she must be in a life or death situtation as to if he has the right to use the firearm/A security Officer has been trained with the firearm and has had a psychogolical test to determine if he has the correct mentall attitude as to when he/she has the right to defend thm selves. In The State of Florida a Security Oficer is paid a few dollars more than a security guard is and a security guard is only permitted to have a pen, tablet and a flashlight.A security Officer may carry his firearm,Ammo, tazer, baton, flashlight and if qualifed to use them he may carry Handcuffs but heir are restrictions as to when they may be used.

The company prides themselves on the officer but the officer is not recognized by the Ops Manager. They don’t understand the officer’s work brings in their pay. It is an unfortunate situation.

What I was trained is simple, a security guard is someone who is UNARMED, who works behind a desk, usually access control, or watches cameras.
A security officer is ARMED, who is on the field, who protects property, life and assets. Some unarmed guards work on the field but it's dangerous and they are useless 99.9% of the time.
