What do they look for in a background check?
It depends on what state you're in. Each state has different laws. If you read the paper that you sign to give them permission to run the background check, it tells you. The most common things employers look for are: 1) All Felony/misdemeanor convictions, not including traffic violations. 2) Your credit report (yes, your credit.) 3) If you are a registered offender. 4) Your driving record and the status of your license.(if applicable, some jobs require you to have a valid driver's license- especially management positions) 5) Your High School transcripts (to verify you obtained a HS diploma) ** This is just the GENERAL items that can/will be included in your background check. Companies, depending on your state's laws and the type of employement you are seeking (ex: Fast food vs. Government job) normally go back 7 years. Some can go back 10 if your state permits it. There is also a 5 year check as well. There are state wide searches, although uncommon. It is more likely to be a Nationwide search, which is most common. They will either ask you for the last 7-10 years of known addresses, and the dates you lived at them. It's okay if you don't remember exact dates, but try your best. Do not leave things out on purpose, because they will show up with either your credit report, driving record, or other content. They will check your records at each address, in each state (if more than one) that you lived at. Keep in mind, government jobs are able to go back as far as they choose, and are able to do a deeper check. Just be honest with them about your background. It looks a lot better if you're upfront and honest, it also shows them that you can be trusted now. However, if you do not tell them, and they find out, your application null and void due to you putting fraudulent information on it. Yes, it's considered fraudulent.
