Pay raises depend from year to year. The pay rate has been consistently low for many years. I started out at around 12 an hour in 2001 and they're not routinely raising the wage for subs. You are not considered certified or an 'employee' but you're sort of like a seasonal, temp employee. Although you are eligible for a higher pay rate if you accept an assignment which I have done and have enjoyed many times. The discipline system is lacking in the schools which is challenging to be a sub for that reason, you do not know names of most of the students to hold them accountable, but they are required to answer you with their name when asked. Children are not well behaved in many of the low income areas. You feel you take your life in your hands to work at rough schools or South side/North Central area schools. You aren't eligible for benefits. I don't agree with paying subs once a month...after all this is a job performed and it is very late to pay one month after. Also, not consistent work in Oct. Nov. Dec. because of Fall Break/Conferences/Holidays, so not worth stress of not being able to count on paychecks.But Perfect for part time fill in as needed work.
