Correctional Officer (Former Employee) –  CciJune 16, 2019
Perfect for young men and women who dont have children or life outside of work. I missed my kids so I ended up quitting. Learn problem solving skills because only a handful of people will help you and you will be nowhere near them. Call a sgt or captain for help you better be dying.

If you're on probation you can get fired for one violation
Sergeant (Former Employee) –  Dodge correctionalJune 15, 2019
If you're on probation you can get fired for one violation The state says they need people real bad but what from what I've seen they don't seem to really care about that because half the people leave within the first year and if you do anything wrong you don't get a second chance in addition people you work for who you think you have your back will rat you out and if they rat you out they won't get admonished for it you'll get fired for it
Pros
Not really it's like being in prison but you get paid and sometimes you get to go home

Do Not! recommend to anyone that they go to Prison.
Inmate Worker (Former Employee) –  Oregon, WIJune 10, 2019
Going to prison is Not Any Fun!! As the song says "If you can't do the Time, don't do the Crime." Stay out of prison, find a better way to live, and be successful outside the walls and fences! Obey the Laws, and keep on "the straight and narrow." Otherwise you will LOSE So Much!!
Pros
A bed to sleep on.
Cons
You lose your Freedom to do even the most simple things.

If you love your life, then don't do it. If you have no life and need money, go for it!
Correctional Officer I (Former Employee) –  Waupun, WIMay 18, 2019
Very stressful environment. Look forward to working 16 hour shifts. Be ready to be ordered to work on your way out of the door. Overtime calls every Tuesday. Your coworkers will go to sleep while the offenders are walking around. Your coworkers will make up roomers about you to see how you will react. If your coworkers don't like you, they will do their best to get you fired. There are unexpected riots at the max prisons. The only reason I would refer this job is if you need money and have no personal life.
Pros
Free prison food (made by the offenders), and overtime money
Cons
forced to work, no teamwork, major drama

Great job for someone with little family life
Correctional Officer (Former Employee) –  Green Bay, WIMay 14, 2019
I loved my job as a correctional officer! But the hours heavily conflicted with my home life! I was working on average 72 hours a week with a home life and a small child. You can make money very easily and work your way up the ranks!
Pros
Lots of overtime
Cons
Long hours, demeaning inmates, lots of overtime

Senior Technical Analyst (Former Employee) –  Denver, COMay 14, 2019
While the DoC help desk is day to day not a manic as many other help desk jobs. Unless one of the State employees dies your a contractor forever. Your contract company will take the majority of your wages as payed by the government. Many of then offer no sick time no vacation time. In fact you will not even be payed for state holidays. Many of the middle management in the DOC IT department have tried to submit request to convert the contractors to FTEs however the department at large prefers to overpay the contracting companies and charge the extra to the tax payer listing the difference in the state budget as "IT Equipment".

Every Day is Different
Probation and Parole Officer (Current Employee) –  WisconsinMay 12, 2019
I really cannot complain about my office as I was fortunate to be in a great office. Probation & Parole as a whole is currently a rough place to be with new techniques and ever changing opinions and ideas. Lots of drugs and other issues that are being addressed inappropriately. Morale is low, more and more offenders and less and less agents.
I do love that every day was different and brought new challenges.
Pros
Sick leave, vacation, benefits
Cons
Little advancement, not enough pay for the expectations

Purposeful and hectic
Community Corrections (Current Employee) –  WisconsinMay 11, 2019
Community corrections is often a selfless job. They pay is sub-par with little in terms of benefits. Yet, individuals that want to make a difference in the world they live are often drawn to this kind of work. It is purposeful, with an average day being extremely hectic. The day begins with a plan, but quickly becomes unravelled. We deal with human behavior which is always unpredictable.

A lot of overtime
Correctional Officer (Current Employee) –  WisconsinApril 7, 2019
There is a lot of overtime working for the DOC. The job can be stressful at times but it's the long hours that take the real toll. It is not always easy dealing with inmates but the job is never boring and there is money to be made if you are willing to work.
Pros
Unlimited Overtime

Not for everyone
Sergeant (Current Employee) –  Waupun, WIApril 5, 2019
Enviroment and treatment of staff vary from institution from institution. Manditory overtime at some locations can be a deterrent for newer staff. However, climbing up the ranks can be done if determined. Alot of time off and ability to trade shifts with coworkers makes this a flexible and great job. Inmates are decent if you're decent to them. The ability to move almost anywhere in the state and have a job is a huge plus. I would recommend Inquirers to talk to security staff member rather than HR and decide if you want to join up. Job can be stressful (inmates can be difficult, alot of fights and self harm, risk to personal safety). Not a job for the thin skinned and light at heart folks. But still a good job none the less.
Pros
Promotion opportunity.
Cons
Overtime. Low pay.

Social Worker/Dept. of Correction (Former Employee) –  Racine, WIMarch 26, 2019
We did Earned Release truly get ready for release.se Program from a medium to maximum institution in order for truly get ready for release and it wasn't a realistic set up. ERP was intended for minimum security with work release prvilges so people could truly get ready for release.

Correctional Officer (Former Employee) –  Boscobel, WIMarch 12, 2019
Working at the DOC was good. Great benefits. The pay isn't enough for the work that is done. It can be dangerous. If they paid better they wouldn't have such a high turn around.

Terrible Work Place at Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility
Correctional Officer (Former Employee) –  Milwaukee, WIFebruary 17, 2019
Poor management, the employees are old, miserable, and bitter. Forced Overtime at the door. You think you're going home when you are not, they'll literally force you to work overtime once you hit the door. The inmates, especially the male inmates will cat call you, disrespect you, etc. Overall, you need to have thick skin and patience for the job. No lie. The only pros are the generous paid time off and i guess the opportunity to work as much as you want. If you want a life, don't work here. If you're a loner and want to pick on people, this is the job for you!

Everyday is the same thing. Fighting the same battle day after day. Being with inmates, other staff or your supervisor. Even when you try to go above and beyond doing something extra there is no credit given. More than likely blame or ridicule instead, questioning why/reasoning behind the matter.
