If you're on probation you can get fired for one violation
Sergeant (Former Employee) –  Dodge correctionalJune 15, 2019
If you're on probation you can get fired for one violation The state says they need people real bad but what from what I've seen they don't seem to really care about that because half the people leave within the first year and if you do anything wrong you don't get a second chance in addition people you work for who you think you have your back will rat you out and if they rat you out they won't get admonished for it you'll get fired for it
Pros
Not really it's like being in prison but you get paid and sometimes you get to go home

Do Not! recommend to anyone that they go to Prison.
Inmate Worker (Former Employee) –  Oregon, WIJune 10, 2019
Going to prison is Not Any Fun!! As the song says "If you can't do the Time, don't do the Crime." Stay out of prison, find a better way to live, and be successful outside the walls and fences! Obey the Laws, and keep on "the straight and narrow." Otherwise you will LOSE So Much!!
Pros
A bed to sleep on.
Cons
You lose your Freedom to do even the most simple things.

Every Day is Different
Probation and Parole Officer (Current Employee) –  WisconsinMay 12, 2019
I really cannot complain about my office as I was fortunate to be in a great office. Probation & Parole as a whole is currently a rough place to be with new techniques and ever changing opinions and ideas. Lots of drugs and other issues that are being addressed inappropriately. Morale is low, more and more offenders and less and less agents.
I do love that every day was different and brought new challenges.
Pros
Sick leave, vacation, benefits
Cons
Little advancement, not enough pay for the expectations

Terrible Work Place at Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility
Correctional Officer (Former Employee) –  Milwaukee, WIFebruary 17, 2019
Poor management, the employees are old, miserable, and bitter. Forced Overtime at the door. You think you're going home when you are not, they'll literally force you to work overtime once you hit the door. The inmates, especially the male inmates will cat call you, disrespect you, etc. Overall, you need to have thick skin and patience for the job. No lie. The only pros are the generous paid time off and i guess the opportunity to work as much as you want. If you want a life, don't work here. If you're a loner and want to pick on people, this is the job for you!

Correctional Sergeant (Current Employee) –  Stanley, WIJanuary 22, 2019
Everyday is the same thing. Fighting the same battle day after day. Being with inmates, other staff or your supervisor. Even when you try to go above and beyond doing something extra there is no credit given. More than likely blame or ridicule instead, questioning why/reasoning behind the matter.

Decent job but not for everyone.
Correctional Sergeant (Former Employee) –  Waupun, WINovember 12, 2018
It is and can be a very rough and stressful environment to work in. Most of the people I worked with were very professional and good at their job. After the loss of the union, it became even more stressful because management could do whatever they pleased. You were only scheduled for 8 hours per day, but you often were forced into working an additional 8 hours like it or not. Vacation time is great, but the sick days were cut to almost nothing. Some overtime pay was unfair. Example being if you were to use a sick day, or vacation day anytime before or after working overtime in the same week you would only be paid at your regular hourly rate instead of time and a half. It was meant to deter people having volunteered to work overtime, and getting paid a premium rate, from taking a sick day to rest afterwards. Nice idea, but if you are unwillingly forced into overtime you could lose the premium rate for having used a vacation day sometime before or even having a prescheduled vacation day after it.
Pros
OK pay, and decent vacation
Cons
Can be very long hours in a stressful environment, and management does not care about you in most cases.

Jobs not bad, management is awful!
Correctional Officer (Former Employee) –  Oshkosh, WIOctober 7, 2018
I was a Correctional Officer for two years and was forced for overtime multiple days in a row and averaged at least two a week throughout my time there. The job instead isn’t bad but when you combined terrible management that micromanaged your every move and being forced for overtime it becomes a miserable job that you just dread of going to day in and day out. The pay for the position is a lot lower than what local gigs offer and the staff turnover is just plain ridiculous. While I was there I saw well more than 100 employees leave, transfer or be terminated. Lastly, they expect you to be a social worker instead of a Correctional Officer, which is just crazy. Jobs not worth the stress and all the family time you will miss. And I can’t say it ENOUGH the supervisors were some of THE worst I’d ever seen. Literally violate policy in front of you and then turn around and conduct an internal investigation on someone doing exactly what they did. Condescending hypocrites.
Pros
I was able to leave most of the time after working 16 hours straight, even though they can keep you 18 HOURS
Cons
Working here, NO LUNCHES. Was told I’d be scheduled times of “inactivity” This was a fabricated lie

Negative, nit picky, data collection paperwork micromanaging
Probation/Parole Agent (Current Employee) –  WisconsinJuly 12, 2018
Go to work in MN of Iowa If you want to work for state government. With the current governor and collapse of the union, it’s run by people who are control freaks. Arbitrary rules, years of every issue the union pushed under the rug now regulated. You don’t dare screw up, use their computers to briefly check something...you’re written up all the time and they will never allow you to feel “job secure.” You work with difficult people and your supervisor will not back you. Working with clients is the easy part. When you’re constantly swamped and they add more, send you for more training and reprimand you for not getting your pile of work done, it leads to horrible morale.
Pros
Days off
Cons
No breaks, non-stop work and it’s never enough.

watch what you do closely and keep your notes
LPN (Former Employee) –  Fond du Lac, WI 54935July 9, 2018
Can be a very rough place to work as a new hire. Training is a real test of your patience. Keep notes of what went on daily privately. New hires are tossed around to different nurses and some can be very impatient and don't want to be training a new hire. Then management hears what you did or didn't do and backfires on you.
Pros
Very good benefits if you can get past the 30 days.
Cons
Management can nit pick you to death & terminate easily.

Correctional Officer (Former Employee) –  Jackson County, WIMay 31, 2018
Everyone stabs you in the back any chance they can, don't trust anybody that works there, they play favorites there so only way to get ahead is by sucking up, overtime is forced with only an hour or less notice. There are no breaks, management are by far the worse that I worked with to date, co workers will make up stuff just to get you fired and there is no job security
