Not a bad place to work
CORRECTIONAL SERGEANT (Former Employee) –  Racine, WIDecember 7, 2017
It was an ok place to work. Many things to get involved in and many people to meet. You can work as many or as little hours as you choose. A lot to get involved in.

Stressful environment. Good training on new technology. workplace culture tends to be negative. Work day is 8 hours. Very little incentive to do better.

True Bureaucracy at Work
Office Operations Associate (Former Employee) –  Brown County, WIDecember 6, 2017
The DOC's technology is a good 15 years behind the private sector, which leads to manually inputting the same data repeatedly in a process that should be automated. Management is absolutely terrible! You can spend years repeatedly pointing out the same problems and offering solutions to those problems; and, even though management will agree, they won't do anything about it. The emphasis is on simply doing the job as it's always been done. And work rules outweigh results: following the rules is far more important that getting the job done right. But, if you enjoy mediocre pay, good benefits, and working with people who don't really like their jobs but are going to hang on for that pension, then this might be for you.
Pros
Good benefits.
Cons
Very inflexible environment (good ideas are NOT welcome), intractable management, very strict work rules, grossly outdate/outmoded systems

this is a thankless miserable career. the benefits are poor and getting worse every year. It is an extremely dangerous job and the inadequate training makes it worse yet.

Great stepping tool if this is your career. The training was direct and hands on. It prepares you for the every day life you can expect working in such a fast paced, readiness environment.

Good entry level.
Probation and Parole Agent (Current Employee) –  De Pere, WINovember 5, 2017
Department does not give new agents any real incentive to stay. Good place to get some entry level experience, then get out! Local managers may be positive leaders, but forced to enforce job duties that are almost impossible to comply with in desired timelines. Work must often be done haphazardly or completed late due to regional expectations.
Pros
Insurance / paid time off / retirement plan
Cons
Stressful / large workload / low pay

despite many political disappointments, and law changes to protect the offender rather than the victim. you need to be convinced that working here is for the good of the community.

Sergeant (Current Employee) –  Little Chute, WIOctober 28, 2017
Monitoring the behavior of convicted felons. Weekend off every 6 weeks. Possibility of working 16 hours daily. Six working day schedule. Working weekends, holidays. Everything is balanced on hiring seniority whether you do a great job or not. The best part of the job is that our shifts walk out safely.

Secured job with benefits, such as dental and health. Fast paced job. Low pay based on the amount of required work. Definitely a job for a person leaning towards law enforcement.

IT member (Former Employee) –  Madison, WIOctober 23, 2017
Terrible place to work. Not only a govt entity but no experienced management and demands on grunts are unreasonable. Workers are not respected nor are they heard.

Dangerous, work with manipulative criminals, you get threatened on a daily basis. But it is laid back with great management and staff alike. Forced overtime is a bummer and it happens alot.

Depending on the location, it can be feast or famine. Flexibility is a plus and so are the benefits. Teamwork is strongly encouraged and most management is helpful.

Correctional Officer (Current Employee) –  Oshkosh, WIOctober 4, 2017
U need to always be on your game. Don't bring your personal life to work. Inmates are always listening. You are always on camera. Never do anything that you wouldn't want to tell your supervisor or the warden about. You put your survival in the hands of the staff you work with everyday. Get to know them and strengths and weaknesses.
Pros
Good staff
Cons
Inmates can never be trusted

Challenging with inmates but experiences are great it gives opprtunities to know all kinds of behavioural patterns and how to deal with it
Correctional Officer I (Current Employee) –  Jamaica, WISeptember 29, 2017
For the pass five(5) years plus, my reviews are based on the fact that I have the opportunity to meet and greet all kinds of personalities and behaviours which results in me taking the right steps in resolving conflicts the best way possible, it was a challenging one however, it was edifying as well as helping me to be more poised and confident in whatever I do.

Correctional Officer (Current Employee) –  Waupun, WISeptember 27, 2017
Getting forced to work 16 hour shifts semi regularly with no notice can be rough on the family. Lots of opportunity to relocate around Wisconsin if you're into that. A lot of vacation.

Vacation time

MSDF is a great place to work, but you will work. You will get mandated though.
Expect to work weekends, holidays, and all different shifts. Everyone is great to work with though.

Supervisor of institution reentry program (Current Employee) –  KMCISeptember 19, 2017
Very stressful working for the DOC. It is not for everyone. It changed me over the 23 years of service. The secondary trauma mentally in dealing with the worst individuals in the prison is very difficult and taxing on ones health mentally.

Challenging
Correctional Officer (Current Employee) –  Waupun, WISeptember 9, 2017
It is definitely a challenging job/career. It is something that can have a positive or a negative impact on yourself as well as inmates. Be sure to go to work with a clean slate and don't allow the little things to eat at you. I truly enjoy what I do, however, the most stressful part for me is that the work life balance is sometimes difficult to deal with especially for those that have a family at home. Make sure to plan ahead and accordingly for a sitter if you have kids because you will get ordered for double shifts with sometimes less than two hours notice. Don't go in with a corn cob so far up your rear that you'd choke on it because you need to be positive. What I have done so far is when inmates ask me why I do it, I'm honest up front and let them know I'll be cool with them if they're cool with me as long as they also remember that I'm there to do my job as well and for me I feel it's gotten me further personally working inside the prison system.
Pros
State lunches
Cons
Sometimes working double shifts

Stressful
Correctional Officer II (Current Employee) –  Union Grove, WISeptember 7, 2017
poor management, very stressful, unrealistic work hours : hard to have a family life, social life, go back to school. a typical day includes: gathering information from the shift before, looking at the institution count , monitor movement, passing medication, collecting mail and scanning for contraband, monitoring meals, communicating with other institutions for inmate intakes, making sure to keep the public safe as well as your coworkers and self.
Pros
Job security, benefits
Cons
16 hour shifts (jams at the door), only 15 min breaks, not allowed to leave grounds, no unpaid lunches, not allowed to make personal calls
