General Staff Member in Virginia Beach, VA

Overall a very good company. Most attorneys and staff work well together, but people are people and not every working relationship is a good fit. Some turnover and unhappy employees, but I think that is due to people being under qualified for the jobs they are hired for. Staff is generally valued, but it is still a business. They have several office functions and often give extra benefits throughout the year. Positive working environment. Great benefits package, equipment and software is mostly up to date.
Paralegal/Legal Assistant in Virginia Beach, VA

Unfortunately they match the job to the person but not the person to the attorney(s). There are many attorneys who value their paralegal/legal assistant (especially in the criminal corner and anyone should be over the moon to work for those guys); HOWEVER, the downside is that so many other attorneys treat their support staff as just a robot with no feeling. Life doesn't go well in a law firm that treats their employees that way. Remote working should always be an option, especially if some one is simply suffering from a bad cold or otherwise and can't be around people but can still function. It doesn't have to be a daily thing but the option should remain open due to Covid standards and the world being on full alarm if someone dare cough. That is NOT the case at this firm. If you are sick, they encourage or it is mandated that you stay home with no option from many attorneys to work from home even though 100% warranted. Just be careful for what you sign on for and pay close attention to the personalities in the few minutes the attorneys give you in the interview.

Everyone has their opinion - and here is mine. Work, and work hard. Stay focused on your tasks. Show up early. Leave late. Or don't - leave on time and show up on time. This is a great mid-size firm to work for. However, you WILL work. Most of the people I work with are highly esteemed within the legal assistant/paralegal/attorney/legal community. Everyone is brilliant/experts in their own right and in their own lane. Own up to your mistakes and hone your craft. This firm has much better benefits than most firms do in Hampton Roads. Small management team, but they don't hound you on every little thing. The best advice I can give someone coming here is to smile, do your work, have standards, and commit to doing your best every day. You have to have a passion to do this type of work - the type of work where you don't necessarily get recognized publicly, there are no accolades or awards, but you can tell that you are vital part of the team and are appreciated. If you don't have a passion to help others or to learn, you will not last long here or really anywhere. Otherwise, this is one of the best jobs I have had in a while.

HR sucks, the least professional work environment. The bottom line for this firm, staff are replaceable and as longs as the attorney's are happy no need to worry about the little people. If you ever did need to have someone in your corner? Good luck! Unless you have an attorney who will go the extra mile for you, you are nothing more than a warm body filling in a desk. They are not accepting nor inviting to anyone who doesn't fit the bill of sale.Save yourself the time and trouble and pass on this firm, because they will take bottom of the barrel and pay the same!
