Self-management
Tutor (Former Employee) - Reston, VA - April 20, 2013
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedGreat if one gets into self-managing. May have it as a job on the side still. In a big city, difficult with traffic and a strain due to that. Still, good for starting to learn how to run one's own business.

pretty cool place to work
Tutor (Current Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - December 1, 2023
Probably the only cons are that they do take like 25% off of your hourly rate each sesssion and when you first start, you're not going to get students easily, but you get to set your own rate and work whenever you want to.

Jobs at Wyzant
No tutor protection from entitled students who won’t pay
STEM tutor (Former Employee) - Boston, MA - November 29, 2023
They don’t give any protection to tutors. I have worked with them on and off for a few years and the overall experience was me doing students homework with the student later not paying Mex

Productive
Math Tutor (Current Employee) - Fair Lawn, NJ - November 21, 2023
I enjoy being tutor for students and Wyzant does a great job in matching you with students and offering you new opportunities depending on your availability and location.

Good for Beginner Tutors
STEM Tutor (Current Employee) - Dearborn, MI - November 8, 2023
They offer a platform to speak to and tutor the clients. I would just say 25% of what you paid is too much, especially because the platform to teach on lags.

Wyzant insights
What people like
- General feeling of work happiness
- Clear sense of purpose
- Time and location flexibility
Good site, stressful algorithm
They're a pretty good service for finding people to tutor. Their platform is easy to use, and tutors keep 75% of the money which is not bad compared to other sites. The main issue I had with them is their ranking system. I got a number of glowing reviews, but somehow the number of students reaching out to me went down. It seems that if you disable your profile and enable it again the algorithm penalizes you. But, it also penalizes you if you take longer than an hour to respond to inquiries. So being a Wyzant tutor is stressful because to continue to rank high in their algorithm it felt like I had to be available 24/7.

It's an excellent opportunity to meet people, apply skills and earn the pay.
ESL Tutor (Current Employee) - Boston, MA - October 20, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Self- employment, choosing the students and schedule I want to work with What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Anticipation before meeting a new student. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? The Wyzant agency and job board is online. When I need help with a business or technical question, I check the FAQs or chat tutor support. They have new requests from potential students every day, and they keep my working and payment history organized for me. The company is set up for success for all 3 parties.

Fine for tutoring work
You have to arrange leads yourself which is extra work you aren't really paid for, but they give you a lot of potential clients so it can work out if you put in the effort

It was a great company 15 years ago
English/English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher/Tutor (Former Employee) - Remote - October 16, 2023
When it started up there were plenty of jobs and great incentives. When the company was sold the new owners over-advertised for tutors, and now there are way too many.
Pros
you can make your own schedule
Cons
sometimes horrible tutees

It has slowly deteriorated
Tutor (Current Employee) - New York State - September 18, 2023
I’ve been working with Wyzant as a tutor since 2012. Back then you were able to eventually get up to 95% of your hourly rate. It was based on how many hours you accumulated and on consistently getting good reviews. There were always so many students and job opportunities. Now there aren’t as many openings (they’ve lost students), and they charge a flat 25% fee from your hourly rate! But not only that, they also charge students an additional 9% “platform fee.” I feel like they’re trying to grab as much money as they can on their way out. It’s no longer worth it to work here.

Wyzant is a perfect company to work comfortably from house with a good salary and a schedule that meets the tutor's needs.
Spanish Language Tutor (Current Employee) - Rock Hill, SC - September 9, 2023
This company is perfect for me because I can choose days and hours of work. I decide how much I charge for the lessons given, and they have never set the price for my lessons. The CEO is constantly posting articles that are useful to us tutors. After my work was done, they deposited five days later in my bank account. In summary, I feel thrilled and very fulfilled working with them since 2010
Pros
The tutor can choose how much he charges for his lessons as well as the days to work.
Cons
No paid vacation and no sick days.

Be careful with the details. They will try to take advantage of you.
Tutor (Former Employee) - South Pasadena, CA - September 8, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? They offer a platform to find and meet with clients. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? They take a large percentage of what clients pay and they can be quite sneaky about it. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? You set your own hours. Basically, you are self-employed.

Work from home, set your own rate, overall good experience
There is a ton of available work if you set your rate low. Working from home saves you a ton of time in commuting etc. Payments are fast - within 3 -5 days - and reliable. Overall a good source of a bit of work when was between jobs. I could easily have scheduled 8 hours a day of tutoring with all the requests I got.

It was okay for a while.
Math Tutor (Former Employee) - Brooklyn, NY - August 2, 2023
It was great, but after COVID happened, it was becoming harder at finding students to teach. And because I prefer face-to-face communication, instead of video calling or over the phone tutoring sessions, it really takes away the ability to build trust and actually know what the student needs help with, since I wouldnt be able to see the materials.

Good Amount of Clients, but at a Price
Tutor (Current Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - July 19, 2023
I've worked at Wyzant for the past 4 years and they've offered me a solid amount of clients over the years in math and science tutoring, but they do take 25% of your earnings with no opportunities for reduction in this rate, which seems unfair to me.

Flexible work hours
Really good place to work if you are interested in helping others learn and providing educational services. You can pick your own hours too, which is great.

Decent online marketplace
Freelance Tutor (Current Employee) - Williamsburg, VA - July 17, 2023
Wyzant is a good website for freelance tutors looking for students online and in person. It can be tough to get established on Wyzant, and you have to pass tests to qualify to teach subjects. Be careful when you take the tests since they do not let you retake if you fail.

Convenient Online Platform
Language Tutor (Current Employee) - Nashville, TN - July 15, 2023
As a contract basis, it is a good platform to work for. You can set your own hours and rates. You do have to pay Wyzant 25% f your rate, but you can calculate how much you can make after you pay the 25%. Wyzant works on the marketing and will bring students to the platform. You will be competing with other tutors, afterall the prospect student will have to choose your profile. I was able to have a decent work pace.

Great side hustle
Tutor (Former Employee) - Pennsylvania - May 22, 2023
Great source for leads if you are trying to start your own tutoring business. Easy sign up and great tools for communicating with clients. Con- They need to add an option for online tutoring.

Flexible hours
Trumpet Instructor (Former Employee) - New York, NY - May 17, 2023
You're allowing Wyzant to become the middle man between you finding students and vice versa. It's great for any instructor to tutor in their respective fields with the software Wyzant provides. You can set your hours and teach however you'd like without following a specific curriculum. And the best part is that you can set your hourly rate.
